3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Euston Tap. Black as hell. Thin beige head. Keg beer served too cold. Some roast on aroma. Some decent black currant fruit. An odd black ipa. Not sure what to make of it. Some liquorice lots of fruit. Some hops. Some bitterness. Not sure whole thing works. Bit bizarre

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Very confusing beer. Aromas of cannabis give way to very contradictory hoppy but dark flavour. Certainly not un-enjoyable, but perhaps not one I will put into regular rotation.

3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle from Stirchley Wines and Spirits, Pershore Road, Birmingham. Unlike some other black IPAs this beer’s colour is befitting of the name. It has an inviting aroma of roasted malts, toffee and a little elderflower. If there was a category for bitterness this would get the full 5 out of 5; it tastes more strongly of coffee than coffee with an extremely long, unrelentingly bitter finish and a rough, slightly gritty mouthfeel. Unfortunately for me, I don’t enjoy the taste of coffee and I prefer my beers with a modicum of sweetness to balance things out. This presents me with a dilemma: I can appreciate this is a well crafted beer - full of character, aromas and flavour; however, drinking beer is meant to be about enjoyment and, truth be told, I didn’t find this particularly drinkable.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap @ Haand Festival 2013. Pours a deep brown, near-black body with a small off-white head. Aroma is grass, resinous herbs, hints of nuts, earthy leaves and green mints. Taste is licorice, deep malts, herbs, resin, hints of grains and almond essence. Medium body and carbonation. A bit strange and grassy.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Big beige lasting head. Dark opaque body. Resiny meaty tropical fruit taste with catty notes. Dry-sweet resiny earthy roasty taste with catty pineapple notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish earthy plastic rubbery aftertaste with wooden spicy roasty notes. Weird. Didn’t like this much. I guess black IPA with Simcoe-like hops is not my thing. 2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Overbearing hop aroma, which sadly borders on the unpleasant. Very bitter in the mouth, with flavours of bread yeast and hairspray. Thick and oily, although with very little lacing. For me, this one does not work particularly well.
