COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Black IPA fuses speciality malts with a tropical punch bowl of new world hops to deliver a contradictory yet cultured concoction. A classically ‘pale’ aroma and quenchingly fruity palate belies a broodingly dark and deceptive appearance. Can a beer be both ‘black and pale’? Time to consult the Magic 8 Ball.

330ml bottle. Pours black with a medium head. Aroma is piney, grassy hops with some cocoa powder underneath. Taste has dusty cocoa to start. Strong, piney bitter finish.

Strewth! A black IPA ... still you lives and learns. Looks like a stout. Then you raise the glass and there’s a huge pungent hop aroma, a bit grapefruity with a hint of mentholish, detergentish smell (but in a good way). Properly bitter IPA, but with a disconcerting coffee note. Long dry finish. Wouldn’t like it any more bitter than this. Interesting fusion of styles which overall I rather like.

(330ml Bottle) The most reserved ’Black IPA’ I think ive drunk , not that ive had loads, but this feels more resemblance to an American stout with the customary abundant use of aromatic hops , than a marring of two styles. Deep jet black, attractive beige head. Nose is hoppy and dark ,basically . On the palate, resiny bitter hops are tropical ,floral ,zesty and bitter ...dark malts are a bit subdued but ’there’ in muted sense .

Black pour. Big tan head with plenty of lacing. Big danky, oniony, malty, caramel aroma. Huge hop presence. A little musty. Malty, danky flavor with some earthy notes. A slight pepper flavor. A little thin, but still decent.

Draught@Euston Tap, London. Deep ambery brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roasted malts along with some slight toffeeish and hoppy notes. Flavour is rather similar with the fruityness being more evident. A bit more like a hopped stout or porter than a black IPA, but still a good good beer nonetheless.

My Bottom Line:
This super grassy Black IPA shares a few grapes and citrus fruit within coniferous resins.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A mushroom of foam sprouts from the blackness, leaving plenty of lacing on the edges of the glass.
-The grassy hop component is prevalent from nose to aftertaste.
-This is not an easy drinking example; it’s intense, and perhaps brash too.
-The resinous hop presence is sometimes redolent of longly steeped leaves.
-The mouthfeel is a bit bulky.
-This is packed with flavour, no doubt. It would surely be a hit in the USA.

On tap at The Evening Star, Brighton.

Tap at Kaisla, Helsinki. Colour is black with small slightly brownish white head. Aromas and flavours: Chocolate, hints of coffee and licorice in after taste, hops, some fruits and roasted malts. Great beer but tartness in taste.

Draft @ LCBF 2013. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty piney hoppy aroma. Roasted malty hoppy bitter caramel flavor with hints of licorice. Has a roasted malty hoppy bitter finish.

Keg at Craft Beer Co., London. Arrived looking seductive with a creamy head. It’s deep and toasty at first, very stout-like, then the citric bitterness arrives in waves and produce some fruity character as it finishes. I can tell this is a well-crafted beer, but the elements didn’t quite click for me. I’m looking for more synergy between the two extremes.

Served from keg tap into a tulip at the Cask, Pimlico, (Feb ’12). Medium black in colour, slighly brownish when held to the light, with a thin off-white head which soon thins to a small pond like surface covering. To the nose I was getting hops, liquorice and a smokey-woody aroma. Flavour wise, bitter hops, smoked malts, burnt tasting daark roasted sugar, pine and a backdrop of tropical fruit. Mouthfeel was perhaps the downfall to this beer in my opinion, too much carbonation spoilt it for me and have nver noticed this to such an extent in previous Magic Rock offerings. Finishes with a bitter-sharp aftertaste.
