COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Black IPA fuses speciality malts with a tropical punch bowl of new world hops to deliver a contradictory yet cultured concoction. A classically ‘pale’ aroma and quenchingly fruity palate belies a broodingly dark and deceptive appearance. Can a beer be both ‘black and pale’? Time to consult the Magic 8 Ball.

Bottle bought from Wineways, Harrogate. Bright and black, with a good creamy head. Hops dominate the nose, but with more to explore. Hops follow through to the palate with notes of liqourice at the back. Black IPA done well. Aging potential? Surely! Great.

Bottle 330ml.

Clear dark black colour with a large to huge, frothy to creamy, good lacing, fully lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, moderate to heavy hoppy, pine, spruce, grapefruit. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, licoric, hoppy, citrus - grapefruit, spruce, pine. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20120121]

Bottle, bought @ Mybrewerytap.
Almost completely black with soft brown edges. Lovely, staying, creamy, light-beige head. Really lovely looking. Aroma has coffee, light roasted malts, some chocolate. Lots of good piney, fruity hops. Apricot, oranges, peach. Medium to low carbonation, great creamy and quite dry mouthfeel. Flavour is fat and malty, roasted, good deal of coffee. Great bitter finish, with piney, herbal and fruity hops notes. Very lovely.

Bottle from Great Grog, Edinburgh
Very dark brown black....ruby light edges...frothy tan head...good lacing
Aroma - Very hoppy...grass hops..bit musty...damp hay..some grapefruit in the background...dark caramel malts...whiff of car tyre...much more hops than malts
Taste - Loads of hops..grassy..some spicy hops..citrus grapefruit more prominent than aroma....resinous..dark caramel and roasted malts in the background
Palate - soft carb..medium....bitter hops......citrus tang. Finish of grapefruit and grassy hops...lots of bitterness but not too much...wee bit of coffee in the lingering tail
Overall - I prefer Black IPAs to be more ’stouty’ than this which is very much more towards the IPA part of the spectrum but the hops have great flavour in this beer. I still prefer Thornbridge Raven over this but it’s still a great beer

330ml bottle. Dark brown body, cracking off-white head. Resinous nose, a tad liquorice, toffee, roast nut aroma. Packed with hops. Slick tasting - in the background there are hints of burnt wood and coffee. Top quality stuff.

330ml- pitch black pour - nice light brown solid head that lasts - loads going on - aroma tropical fruits, shoe polish - with eyes closed it tastes like a hoppy amber ale - great example of what a Black IPA should be (to me anyway)

Bottled 05/05/12. A black beer with a thin beige coloured head. Good grapefruit hoppiness in the nose with more roast than other BIPAs. Similar in the mouth. Very bitter and hoppy but also pretty roasty. Pretty dry. Nice no doubt but not your typical BIPA.

UPDATED: MAY 29, 2012 33cl bottle. Pours jet black with big frothy tan head, plenty of lacing. Aroma full of pine, citrus, light tropical notes - a real C-hop hit; slight roasted and coffee notes in there too. Taste is much more on the dark side with coffee, molasses, roasted barley as well as those juicy hop notes - great balance. Full, silky mouthfeel, lovely lasting aftertaste - an appealing mix of both roasted notes and bitter hops - great BIPA.

Keg in CP&K, Pimlico. Opaque black/very dark brown, foam off white 1 inch head. Nose is big and bold. Lots of hop - tropical fruit, pine, eucalyptus, earthy, shoe leather and shoe polish. It’s the earthiness that is making this work for me. Taste is earthy, christmas tree pine, menthol and eucalyptus, roasted malt, new shoes or that smell you get in shoe repairers and on the finish it’s grapefruit citrous bite. Probably the best black IPA I have had.

Opaque black beer, tidy tan head. Crispy palate. Nice mellow dark malts with an undertone of toffee. Well integrated pine hops. Red berry fruits with mild orange hops. The lovely toffee dark malt comes back and rounds things off nicely. Semi dry finish. Great black IPA.
