As many an ardent suitor may have said to Cleopatra: "What a lovely nose!" And in this case, it really is. Vineous, sinewy, sweet and sour and full of molasses, citrus and spice. The flavour that follows, though great, sadly doesn’t live up to the promise. It’s good, mind - bitter, sharp, dry and hoppy - but let down slightly by a thin mouthfeel and a tiny touch too much of the dirty socks. Nevertheless, if only for the nose alone a great brew with complexity, distinction, and a fair wallop of ancient Egyptian promise.

On tap @ Kickl. Close to black body with a medium sized beige head. Nice citric fruity hop aroma with hint of chocolate. Flavor is sweet malty, light roasted, citric fruit, rather bitter and fine balance. Medium body, bitter and sweet aftertaste, quite smooth. A pleasant black IPA.

Bottle from mr_h. Hop & tar aroma. Very dark brown colour, not much head. Hoppy flavour. Smooth with bitter aftertaste. Good but not the best black IPA.

Keg at CP&K. It pours jet black, with a thick beige head. The nose is pine, resin, toffee, charcoal, toast, roasted malt and charred wood. The taste is liquorice, resinous hops, salted caramel, dark toffee, pine, alcohol warmth, smoke, charcoal, leaf, toast and roasted malt, with a long bitter-sweet finish. Medium-full body and moderate carbonation. A flavoursome black IPA.

[keg at the Hanging Bat, Edinburgh] How have I not rated Magic 8 Ball until now? Blackish brown pour, thick, cream-coloured head. The aroma is deep and malty, with leather and piney hop combining, although somewhat muted due to the cold keg serve. On the taste, first flavours are cold coffee, leather and roasted chocolate malt, before the hops arrive as orange and lemon, pine and resin. Great Black IPA [16012013]

33cl bottle. Pours opaque black with a red hue and a nicely proportioned head. The nose has pine, grapefruit pith and just enough coffee. The taste has a burnt coffee note with a pithy finish. Medium to full bodied, big texture, relatively clean. Overall, a good andn interesting beer.

Black IPA seems to be flavour of the month. Pours black (surprise) with a decent white head. Malt and hops combine on the nose along with a touch of chocolate. Hoppy, citrus flavour with malt in the background.
