COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This copper colored German-style ale is highly hopped and has a medium body and malty flavor. No hop additions were made during the last 30 minutes of the boil. Norther Brewer and Spalt hops are used along with ample Munich malt for authenticity, although Magnolia's house strain of English ale yeast was still used (albeit fermented at a lower temperature and matured for a longer period). Ashbury Alt is crisp and smooth.

UPDATED: MAR 14, 2003 I've had this beer from two different batches and both were completely different. The first batch, it was a nice alt -- clean, crisp, nice malty undertones, medium bitterness, very drinkable. The second batch, it was a little funky, yeasty, not at all clean and crisp, cloudy, and malty. I"ll give it the benefit of the doubt and base my numerical ratings on the first batch. I"d definitely try it again, simply because the first batch was quite nice. Hopefully the second batch just tasted funky because of infection or process problems and not because they changed the recipe.

Update 3/14/2003: Third batch I've drank from. This one is good again. Quite crisp. Nice underlying bitterness although a bit subdued. I'd be happy to see this a bit maltier with a bit more bitterness but it's nice.

Clear golden with no head. Earthy aroma and taste with smooth caramel flavors and a mild bitterness.

Deep red with a nice smell of hops. Decent amber. Like the fact they use local everything for their beer. Nice place, but small. Parking a BIG problem. Had to park 1/2 mile away to get there. The area is not good. Wouldn’t go at night.

Tap. Hazy dark amber color. A very crisp wheat yeasty type flavor. Some little hop addition.

Over carbonated and pretty watery. Not a rich flavor at all. Needs lots of work. Cool pub but I got my hopes up too much.

UPDATED: JUL 23, 2006 Deep red/purple. Vibrant, fextive flavor or grains, wheat, sweet musty farm-like nose and flavor. An excellent altbier.

Dark amber colour and reasonably rich, slightly earthy malt aroma. Has a slightly chewy note, with breadcrusty finish. Could use some hop attack for authenticity’s sake. This is really just an amber.

Draft. Dark amber-brown-red with a nice beige head. Malt aroma. Malt and caramel flavors (though a bit light) ending with a touch of earthiness.

This is an okay beer, a maltier profile but like the other ales I tried from this brewery it tastes a little watered down. Carbonation is set too high and it robs from the flavor experience. Slight taste of Budweiser-like flavor. Hmmm...that is never a good sign. This is a really neat pub though. Great murals, sweet location, and KIND folk everywhere...

Tap@ Magnolia Pub and brewery, San fransisco- Pretty OK in terms of drinkablitity, got some appleskin and toffee in the flavour, grainy body, approachable for the masses.
