COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Made with Maris Otter pale malt, several different crystal malts, and just a touch of black malt, Blue Bell boasts a rich malt complexity balanced by generous additions of British hops (Challenger, Northdown, and East Kent Goldings). The English malt and hops are a natural with our yeast strain and we add some mineral salts to the water to enhance authenticity. Fruity and caramel notes are present. Copper-hued and medium bodied, Blue Bell is a little on the strong side but still makes a fine session beer. It is also the first beer made at Magnolia.

(06.21.07) On tap at Magnolia Pub and Brewery, San Francisco, CA. 4.9% ABV. Hazy amber ale with small white head. No carbonation. Faint malt aroma. Medium bodied. Starts dry with light malt flavor; slight green tea/vegetal mushroom flavors; perfumy hop flavor. Medium length finish with light malt fade with light lingering hop bitterness. Good drinkable beer but on the watery side.

Draught. Arbitrary score 4/5 for Appearance, as nighttime conditions prevented correct assessment. Woody, faintly fruity nose, subdued. Bitter, hoppy, but not citrussy. Again very light-fruity notes; if it’s fruit, it’s unrecognisable. Medium bodied at best, feels highly carbonated. Pleasing, if totally unspectacular beer.

This is a pretty mediocre bitter. Lacking a lot in aroma and flavor. Truly a pity.

Draft... Medium clear copper, dark than the bonnie but the head is weaker... Weak boring head, light toffee... Toffee with vanilla, weak finish

Small beige head. Clear brown body. Light roasty earthy aroma, sort of bland. Dry roasty caramelly taste with hints of sweetness. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry roasty resiny caramelly aftertaste with floral fruity notes. Decent, but boring. (0.5l cask at brewpub.)

From the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center Denver 18/09/2010 Some hop aroma. Bronze coloured smooth on the palate and malty with a hint of bitterness in a dry and nutty malt finish.

Cask in Magnolia, San Fran. Pours amber. Nice floral aromas from hops (more like English hops) and some caramel malt. Taste is very much like an English bitter (say Landlord) but not quite as much floral complexity. Bitter meets a brown ale. Dry on the finish. Nice stuff.

On cask at the brewpub (listed at 4.5%). Pours with a lightly hazed copper body with an off-white head. Aromas of caramel, berries, toast with a light spicy not. Flavors are somewhat laden with diacetyl, caramel, butterscotch, berries with a toasted grain note. Medium carbonation.

A: The pour is a dark amber color, perhaps copper with a finger or more of off-white head. S: Oh man, this beer smells like buttered popcorn from the movie theater. A mild toasted bread aroma and perhaps a hint of roast, but mostly butter. T: Tons and tons of butter with a bit of bread, popcorn, and some mild toasted malt flavor. Pretty simple and pretty, bad, to be quite blunt. M: The body is medium with a fairly low level of carbonation. D: Damn this was bad. No beer should have this much butter in it.
