COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a full-bodied porter, one step away from being a stout. Black in color, full of sharp black malt bitterness and a hint of roast barley, Cole Porter also bursts forth with a surprising hop aroma and flavor.

On tap at Alembic. A decent porter. I don’t know if it’s quite "one step away from being a stout" though, unless that step is a big step in fullness of palate. Black color with a medium tan head. Aroma is mostly roasted malts and coffee. Hops apparent. Flavor is roasty with a coffee taste that lingers at the end. Medium palate, maybe a little thinner than I’d like.

Cask. Pours a black color with a large, tan head. Nice malted milk ball aroma. Thin body, toast and malts dominate here. Bitter, burnt finish.

On tap at Magnolia. Pours black with two finger brown head. Pretty thin mouthfeel. Strong coffee aftertaste. Not really memorable.

Draft. Brown/black beer with a tan head. Chocolate and light roast aroma. Chocolate, light roast flavor with some acrid malt. Medium body. Acrid malt lingers with chocolate, roast, and slight coffee.

Black colored brew. Nice malty bitterness. Chocolate, coffee, hoppy. Nice one!

Draft at the brewpub. Toasted malt aroma. Dark opaque black color with no real head. Near medium body with minimal carbonation. Light roast (touch of toast) malt with floral bitter and a hint of coffee. Finishes dry, but not astringently so. Really rather refreshing in a dark way.

On cask at the brewpub. As expected, this is a dark black beer, but there’s barely a head, even on cask. Coffee reigns here, with a bitter finish. Thinner than I’d expect from a cask porter, but the flavor saves the day. (#3406, 4/11/2008)

Draught at the brewpub. Black, near no head. Tarry licorice aroma. Aggresive resiny hops makes up most of the flavour. Dryish, yet syrupy. Tarry roasty finish. Some interesting flavours, but feels quite rough.

Sampled at Magnolia, June 2007. Dark brown with a thick light brown head (ruby edges). Roasty, caramel nose. Flavorful. Plenty of mocha, chocolate, caramel and coffee. Bitterness from some of the roasted malt. Medium bodied, too fizzy/overcarbonated for a porter - it put a bit of a damper on an otherwise fine beer. Tune this thing down a bit and we got a winner.

On tap at the brewpub. Half pint. Relatively faint, lightly roasted aroma with some sweet choco malts. Perhaps a bit of anise present, too. Virtually opaque black-ish body with a moderate light brown head. Roasty, chocolate-like maltiness. A few tannins present, but still is smooth and creamy. A little overcarbonated. Pretty good stuff.
