3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 luvcasks (178) - USA - FEB 19, 2006Aroma: Roasty toasty with hoppy aromas coming through
Appearance: Almost black with some deep red notes... very little off white head
Flavor: Some chocolate and coffee balanced with a nice hop bitterness
Palate: Medium bodied with a silghtly dry finish which I felt was a little astringent
Overall: A very good porter... I llove the chocolate and hoppy flavors.... though porters are becoming staples in a lot of microbreweries, still a fabulous english style

Draft... Dark brown, ok tan head... Nose of roasted chocolate, with cocoa nibs... Taste is a bit of a letdown, roasted cocoa nibs, a vegetal note and a bitter vanilla finish, all over the place... So so

On tap at the brewpub. Pours with a opaque black body with brown highlights. Head is tan and mostly lasting. Aromas are dusty, cocoa, earthy, vanilla, coffee, leather, dry leaves. Bitter but yet quite rich chocolate notes for a porter. Nice bready malt profile. No hops, mostly clean yeast wise. Flavors are dry, roasty, coffee, roasted barley, leather, bitter, ashy. Lightly bready. Medium to low carbonation, dryish finish. Roasty and lightly astringent. Slight carbonic or mineral bite in the finish. Well made.

Nearly black with minimal head. Aroma has a light roasted malt profile, a medium coffee note, light chocolate. Similar in flavor with a light earthy hop presence, too. An excellent porter. Wish I could have had a few more while I was there.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 womencantsail (6867) - Garbage Grove, California, USA - JAN 17, 2011
A: The pour is a very dark brown, almost black, with some reddish highlights and a khaki colored head.
S: Very roasty, especially for a porter, with perhaps a bit of burnt sugar. There are some nice coffee aromas and I would say some bitter dark chocolate is in there as well. Maybe even a hint of licorice.
T: Once again, an intense roasted malt character to the beer. There’s a moderate bitterness associated with that and a muted chocolate flavor. A pretty decent amount of coffee, too. This beer seems fairly dry.
M: The body is medium and so is the carbonation. As I said, pretty dry on the back end.
D: I’d actually consider drinking this again. I like this beer quite a bit, probably one of the better Magnolia beers.
