Sampled during RBSG 7/9/2009 on tap at the brewpub. This porter pours an eclipse black color from the tap. Small to medium sized beige head. The aroma is chocolate and coffee, with a hint of vanilla. A medium bodied porter. The malts are chocolate and coffee, with some tobacco, some pepper and a hint of vanilla. The hops are earthy. Nice soft carbonation. Nice balance. A very sweet tasting porter with a bunch of chocolate and coffee flavors. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Draft. A pitch black beer with a lazing brown head. The aroma has strong notes of roasted malt, combined with notes of soy sauce, chocolate, and sweet malt. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of roasted malt as well as lighter notes of coffee and tobacco, leading to a dry and rather bitter finish.

Draft at a restaurant in San Francisco. Comes to me beautifully black with a thick dark brown chocolate head. All black no light at all, looks like a great dessert. The aroma is bittered chocolate with some sweet cake like bread. Really cool aroma. The flavor was more light on the chocolate character but more just watery dark malts with some malt sweetness and a nice bitter touch at the end of the flavor. As it warms a little bit of a smoke character emerges. It is very easy drinking.

Cask at the brewpub. Very black with a tan head. Light aroma of burnt, ashy malt. Dry with a burnt malt and acidic flavor that reminds me a lot of an Irish stout. Low carbonation with a light-medium body. I think a little more carbonation would have helped this along. maybe the cask wasn;t the best way to serve it. Also, lacked the sweetness and softer roasted flavors that i expect in a porter. Really seemed closer to a dry stout.
