3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 MI2CA (1340) - Noblesville, USA - FEB 21, 2007
4oz sample in a full size tulip at brewery - Aroma of prunes, plums, raisin, alcohol and earty hops. Pours deep mahogony with a small head and good lacing. Flavor matches aroma with strong alcohol and a deep fruitiness. The hops shine a little too brightly for my tastes. Palate is tart and sticky. A really nice barleywine I’d love to have with a little age on it. Very tasty none the less.

Pours a ruddy brown with a thick but shrinking beige colored head. The aroma jumps out as cherry hard candy with hints of malt and molasses. The flavor is punishingly alcoholic but tasty with sweet cherry, caramel dense maltiness with a strong toasted bitter finish. Nice one, if a bit tough to drink.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours murky dark amber with tan head. The aroma is mild with smooth dark fruity esters mixing with a subtle sweet maltiness that’s a bit musty. The taste is smooth dark fruitiness, some black strap molasses, old musty sweet malts and a dash of caramel here and there. It tends to get a tad bright now and then. More cellar time and this will be fantastic.

Toronado Barleywine Fest 2010. Not sure where the name of this one came from, but that sounds like a story I’d want to hear. Pours dark brown with an off-white head and excellent lacing. Really looks great. Aroma is fairly simple but nice, with caramel and more roast than pretty much any other barleywine I had there that day. Flavor is very roasty for the style and almost reminiscent of a stout in a way. Biscuit, caramel, and toffee as well. This one is all about the malts. Medium body with average carbonation and just slight booziness. Very good overall, above average even among the great selection I had there.

From tap at Pi bar. Pours dark brown and hazy with a small tan head, nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is fruity, hoppy and dark caramelish malty. Solid roasted malty and thick caramelish flavoured. Nice bitterness lurking through. Thick caramelish finish mixed with a growing bitterness.

Tap @ Magnolia for 2008 SBM. Poured a deep hazed golden brown color with a beige head. The aroma is thick with notes of raisin pulp (is that what you call the middle of them?). It smelled like a box of Sun Maid. The flavor was of raisins and sweet malt. Medium bodied.

Wooohoo. Great to try a beer with this name (and it’s over 10% too!). Tried on tap at Magnolia pub during strong ale month. Great pub/restaurant. Creamy microbubble head. Deep red color. Sweet. Alcohol well hidden. Delicious.
