ultraspank (856), Dublin, Ohio, USA Dec 12, 2007 Nose of banana bread, hints of bubblegum, alcohol, and caramel. Pours sparkling ruby. The fully diminishing frothy tan head leaves no lace. Spicy and malty front, highly acidic middle, the finish is roasted and fruity. The full creamy body is lively. The finish is crisp.
luv_casks (175), USA Oct 5, 2008 pours a really impressive dark brown contracted with a nice light coloured head. The rocky head was sustained by what seemed like slightly high carbonation.
Overall: A very tasty and warming beer I think the alcohol and higher Final Gravity make this a sipper.
Aroma and Flavors are similar - Some earthy notes (wheat) spices, touch of banana and some dark roast like cocoa. Some dark fruit notes make an appearance as the beer warms up.
I think the slightly higher carbonation helps dry the beer out but the bite is distracting. Maybe the sample I had was not handled well but I think this could be even better.
Another wonderful beer from Mahr’s. If you ever get a chance to try the unfiltered lager on tap dont miss the opportunity it is spectacular DYCSoccer17 (2036), Davis, California, USA Sep 26, 2008 16 ounce bottle purchased at BevMo in Natomas, CA. Ashy, burnt, choco notes with some banana esters and some wheat aromas present, as well. Some ethanol is present retronasally. There are also some lightly sweet chocolate malt aromas with a bit of anise, too. Complex aroma. Would score better if the ethanol wasn’t apparent. Mildly hazy cola-colored body with a smallish off-white head that is kind of wimpy. Lacing isn’t really a factor. This is highly carbonated, which is my initial impression. After the bubbles calm down, I get a nice roasty, chocolately body with a bit of dry wheat flavoring as well as some estery notes. Very rich and robust. The ethanol is hidden very well and I think that this is a shade away from being an epic beer. Lose the carbonation and lose the ethanol twang, and you’re looking at one sick beer. Give me a lil more head, too. Still good, just slightly off. Magic_dave6 (4000), London, Greater London, England Sep 18, 2008 Bottle at GBBF with many hands and not enough chaps. Alround rating: Wheaty, treckle, banana, fruity esters, its not really my style of beer anymore and i find it relitivly boring. mjg74 (1798), La Mesa, California, USA Sep 12, 2008 Bottle fom BevMo, La Mesa. Dark hazy brown in color, with a huge head. Aroma is dark fruit and roasted maltiness. There is also a bit of sweet yeastiness that give this brew a light anise scent. Sweet flavors with good yeast and spices. Lots of dark fruits and roastiness as well. Nice brew. MiP (6019), Flensburg, Germany Sep 7, 2008 Draught at GBBF08. Citric aroma, perhaps a little malt. Cloudy very dark brown colour. Small creamy light brown head. Sourish flavour, not really sweet or alcoholic.
