Tawny pour. Big off-white head that slowly falls. Plenty of lacing left behind. A slight metallic and tea aroma. Some hoppy? aroma. Roasted flavor that is quickly drowned out with burnt grains and that metallicness that was in the nose. It’s not overpowering though. Not that bad. But that metallic nose and taste would get old in a hurry.

Draft. Amber-brown beerwith a dark cream head. caramel and light toffee aroma. Caramel and light earthy flavor. Medium bodied. Caramel and light toffee lingers with light earth.

Pours murky yellow color with small head. Aroma of hoppy fruits, some salmiac and malts. Flavor of salmiac, malts and fruits.

Sorry for the german rating, but this is a lousy rating from my "newbie" time (2007-2009), and it’s not worth of being translated. I just added it for the statistics, and to complete my backlog!
Im Glas steht ein dunkles, nussbraunes Bier mit guter, cremig feiner Krone. Der Geruch ist dezent süßmalzig, zart röstig. Der Antrunk erfolgt leicht röstig mit angenehm bittermalzigem Hintergrund. Kommt mir sehr cremig vor. Im Abgang sind bittermalzige und süßliche Töne erkennbar. Die Mitte wird deutlich süßer, das zieht sich bis zum Finish hin, welches wieder etwas bitterer wird. Gefällt mir sehr gut! Schön ausgewogenes Dunkles.

A clear red/brown colored beer, with a small beige head. The aroma of red fruit, berries, some malt and candies. The taste of sweet fruit with candies, a little bitter. The aftertaste is still sweet and also a little bitter.

On tap at the Hessen Haus.
The beer pours a deep ruby color with a small well retained head that leaves some lace on the glass.

The aroma is very rich with chocolate and malty character, both lightly sweet and very clean.

The flavor is fruity with some cherry and chocolate out front some earthiness and a mild roastiness are in the background and this has a really enjoyable noble hop expression bringing a good balanced bitterness. The beer is not really very sweet as many of the dunkels we get in the US tend to be.

I quite like this.

Draft at the brewpub. Another Bamberg beer labeled as a dunkel that doesn’t meet my paradigm, this again being more of an amber. Caramel malt with a tart finish. Good and enjoyable. Sure wish we could’ve eaten here. (#4398, 12/3/2011)

Draft at Churchkey. Cloudy brown burgundy pour with an average sized, fairly thick head. Nose and flavor are both strongly reminiscent of straight wort, along with toasted malt and nuttiness. Smells and tastes like a brewery. Crisp, drinkable on the mouthfeel. Pretty nice.
