Pours a very thick foamy tannish colored head. Beer itself is dark brown. Aroma not very prevalent. Perhaps that of slightly wet newspaper. Fairly high in carbonation with brown malts on in the flavor. Flavors open up slightly after bottle has been open and beer has a chance to warm up a little. Typical thin body of a germanic brew. It was on the close-out rack at Bevmo for $2/btl. Kind makes me wish I’d bought more.

Deep copper in color with a small off-white ehad. Faint hops and malt aroma. Flavor is of toasted/roasted malt, hoppy, sweet malty start moving into a dry finish.

Broudy’s Liquors, Jacksonville Beach, Fl - 1 pt. .9 fl oz swingtop bottle. Pours a dark ruby red with a thick fluffy mocha colored head. Chocolate and coffee aroma with a bit of underlying ripe fruit. Flavor is a little flat, has some cherry notes, a bit of smokiness but not too pronounced. Mouthfeel is kind of bland and dapens the little bit enthusiasm I had for this one.

Not at all what I was expecting...Dark, with chocolate and roast predominating, earthy, more like a porter really, not very lager like at all. It is a rustic and satiating beer and definitely flaovorful, but not like the bready, munich malt dominated Dunkels found elsewhere in Bavaria and Franconia. Nice stuff but not so much my cup of tea...

Bottle. Very dark brown body with a big beige head that diminishes. (3+) Muted aroma is a ashen-smokey-roast nutty mocha mess. Lingering dry chalky acidity. Average to medium palate. Just something about it rubs me the wrong way.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2005 In the cool homebrewer-friendly flip cap 500 ml bottle from Cyclone Liquors. Light body with a white head. Dark brown colored beer.Very roasted in flavor. Maybe a little toasted. Disappointingly light in body. The bottle and the price ($2.99) were the best things about it. UPDATE: 10/18/05 Now on tap at the Huber Haus. Roasted flavor is more pronounced, but still too weak in the body department for me.

Bottled from Holiday Wine Cellars. Never being a fanatic of dunkels or other Deutsch beers for that matter, I gave this festive seasonal brew a go. Cocoa powder, caramel and a light touch of smoked malts mask the beer out of the bottle. Dark copper brown with minimal head formation. Sweet tones of maple sugars, chocolate and roasty earth notes cement the beer’s flavor. Nothing much more intriguing to me that I noticed. Crisp and light finish, no heaviness whatsoever. Im going back to Belgium.

(bottle - 500 ml fliptop) Deep brown pour with a thin tan head. Aroma is malty with some biscuit and fruit notes. Flavor is mildly fruity and sweet at the beginning with some smooth and caramel malts near the end. Finishes very clean. Very thin-bodied.

Swing top ... OK, I didn’t expect this to be a dark beer for some reason. The aroma is smoky and meaty, like beef jerky. But after that promising introduction, the beer falls flat ... literally. Flat and little texture and without any strong flavor components, this settles to be a moderately chocolatey beer with a mild chalkiness and a hint of smoke. (#3086, 9/9/2007)
