Unfiltered Lager

Let’s be honest: You’re probably more likely to take illegal substances while you listen tothe heavy metal band Mastodon. But Mastodon and their crew had the opportunity to get shitfaced legally while they were playing the recent Sonisphere stop in Hockenheim, Germany on Saturday. Stephan Michel of Mahr’s Brau brewery created a limited edition Mastodon Premium Lager that was handed out to Mastodon and their crew at the show. They were reportedly "swallowing

Love Mahrs. Visited twice. Never seen this beer. Darn good if you ask me. As solid an unfiltered lager as I have tasted. Why don’t American brewers make stuff like this?

pours unclear if not hazy bright orange with a frothy and resilient off-white head, nice lacing. toasted and fruity maltiness, fairly spicy - peppery, toasted bread - rye loaf of bread if not pumpernickel, very fruity - nice mellowing lagering esters, fresh grass, pils, touch of sulfur. moderate carbonation, light body - oily, dry and crisp herbal-leafy-grassy-spicy finish. yummy stuff.

Bottle at home. Pours somewhat clear and sparkling dark gold with a medium-sized, frothy tight bubbled head, medium-long retention with light lacing. Aroma is a huge nose of sweet corn Pils malt, light honey/toast with light spicy and earthy hops. Flavor is sweet corn Pils malt dominant, light earthy and spicy hops, medium bitterness offering a balance to the malt, though the sweetness lingers on into the finish with the bitterness staying at the tip of the tongue. Light-medium body, moderate carbonation, lightly prickly and carbonic bite.

Cloudy glowing amber color. Big malty smells. Swamp malty mashy big lager leaves.

Tan amber with a fluffy, beige head. Malted nose with a nice grainy character and with a crisp German hop presence. Hops are nearly absent from the body where the malted body resonates with a moderate graininess and mellow melanoidin notes. Toasty caramel popcorn finish. A nice malt-forward beer.

Poured into a pint glass, also happy Fat Tuesday! Poured a very pretty copper with very thin white head. Aroma is very nice malty hint of yeast. Flavor is very clean light malty. Would love to have more. Very good beer.

500ml bottle. Unfiltered orange-tan body. Big, creamy, white head. Kind of an oddball beer. Earthy, chewy malt, maybe a hint of amber malt, noble hops. Not that impressive of an offering. A touch more bitter than most Franconian beers, but the balance or finesse isn’t there. Some off undertones. Drinks easy enough, just can’t get over the grainy, off tones. Disappointing offering from a brewery I hold in high regard.

Light copper color. Bready malts, slightly sweet, with a hint of orange. Grassy/sprucy malts, similar to a pils but less pronounced. Low bitterness. Unfiltered, with some nice earthy/yeasty flavors. Well-balanced & refreshing.

Pours a golden copper color with a small white head that leaves no lacing. Fruity aroma of orange, grape, lemon, even strawberry and bready malt. Taste is lighter than the aroma with a bit of citrus, biscuits and cereal malt. Crisp and refreshing. Nice citrusy hop aftertaste with a quick and slightly bitter finish. Typical lager palate with a light body, thin texture, and medium high carbonation. Overall pretty good. Would make a nice summer beer.

Malty fruit sour hops aroma. Light golden color. Great mouth feel. Light creaminess light tart on the sides and tingling on the tip of the tongue.

Yet another style ticker. Cool bottle. Beer pours a clear medium amber with white head. Scent is grapey and grassy. Flavor is sweet and earthy. Light-Medium body with appropriate carbonation. Whole thing reminded me of a high quality malt liquor. Bottle - Ale Yeah! - Decatur, GA
