Unfiltered Lager

Let’s be honest: You’re probably more likely to take illegal substances while you listen tothe heavy metal band Mastodon. But Mastodon and their crew had the opportunity to get shitfaced legally while they were playing the recent Sonisphere stop in Hockenheim, Germany on Saturday. Stephan Michel of Mahr’s Brau brewery created a limited edition Mastodon Premium Lager that was handed out to Mastodon and their crew at the show. They were reportedly "swallowing

Love Mahrs. Visited twice. Never seen this beer. Darn good if you ask me. As solid an unfiltered lager as I have tasted. Why don’t American brewers make stuff like this?

Bottle. Pours a cloudy light orange with minimal head. Rather eatery with soft flowery smell. Light malt bread aroma. Taste is soft white bread with a light banana and pear flavor. Pretty damn decent. A tad sweet or could use some more carbonation to break it up. Otherwise yum.

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2015 4 oz pour from tap into sniffer at 42 degrees. Nose wheaty and a little grassy. Medium body. Crisp. Dry. Kind of a cab sav taste without any of the grape sweetness. A beer for a hot day.

Pour is a hazy yellow with a large white head. Aroma is full of doughy pale malts and a nice creamy yeast. Flavor is grassy malts nice a nice hop that survived the journey. Finish is as rich as an ale and leaves a bit of honey malt. This was a pretty solid unfiltered lager. No wet paper bag or skunk, this is full of bready malt and a nice hoppy backbone.

Draft at The Top. A great hoppy as hell Kellerbier. Grassy, a bit lemony, a bit of a spicy noble hop quality. Really drinkable and good as hell.

Bottle: Slightly hazy orange-gold with a puffy beige head. Barley, honey and hay scent. Taste is sweet, earthy grains, honey/lemon. Malty...rich, fruity. An excellent beer.

Mahr’s Bräu Mastodon has a thick, unusually fizzy, off-white head, a very hazy (which becomes murky, when the sediment is swished & poured in), gold-orange appearance, and lace curtain left behind. The aroma is of sharp, sweet & sour bread, yeast, and a grass of some sort. Taste is of those elements, with a low-level, balancing bitterness, weeds, red soil, and cream. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and chewy, and this beer finishes a bit cloying and full. Overall, it is a sipper and surely not a gulper. One would be hard pressed to session this lager. RJT

UPDATED: APR 29, 2015 Draft. Clear golden color, medium white head. Aroma of light honey, fresh hay. Taste is earthy citrus and straw. Rerate at Churchkey courtesy of craftycarl21, thanks! Aroma is more peppery and dusty, taste cleaner and crisper. Really nice.

500mL bottle, nose is wonderfully sunny citrus with slight grain, good malt character, lighter toasty and grassy notes, medium hay. Lightly hazy golden leaning toward orange, strong carbonation yields only a short white head. Crisp medium body, semi-dry with strong sunny malt character up the middle, slightly spicy and grassy hops with a bready and lightly earthy finish. Light bitterness and a touch of warmth, grainy and fizzy, very slight candyish note. Some slightly unclean/impure character in the aftertaste but it’s minimal; sweetness really accumulates on the palate with volume. Feels much larger than it actually is, but remains rather drinkable.
