Extra Hoppy Amber Weiss. Mahr’s master brewer has a new love -- an exciting and saucy new variety of Hallertauer hop called Saphir, German for "sapphire." There’s a metric ton of Saphir hops in this ground-breaking Weiss.

(gusking) pours unclear medium dark golden orange with an aerial off-white head, disappearing and leaving no lacing per say. plain caramel, faint wheaty notes - lightly acidulated, brown sugar and barley, faint fruitiness - red berries, oranges; astringent and bitter grassy leafy hops, belgian spice-free feeling more than a hefe. lively and foamy carbonation, light body - watery; semi-sweet caramel and assertive woodsy-grassy finish. bottling issue aside, this fruity and wheaty hefe falls a bit short, morover regarding mahr’s high standards.

The body has a heavy haze and a dark brownish amber color. It is full of yeast and at the bottom of the glass there are some small chunks of yeast sediment. Up on top it shows off a thick three to four finger tall, long lasting head. This head is off white in color with a few spots of brown yeast sediment. Lacing on the glass is slick and slides right down the sides as I drink. The aroma has fruity yeast with loads of banana with a little spice and a hint of apple. Hop notes are faint and way off in the distance. The flavor reflects the nose with loads of banana notes from yeast as well as some light clove, bubble gum and a touch of apple. Towards the end I notice more wheat bread and bubble gum notes and a light touch of hop spice and bitterness. The palate is smooth and a little thick or full feeling.

Sampled from a 16 oz brown bottle this beer poured a murky orange color with a huge foamy orange-tan head that lingered forever and left good lacing. The aroma was sweet caramel, honey, faint citrus and spritzy pineapple. The flavor was tangy and tart with notes of citrus, pineapple, toasted caramel and honey. Medium length finish. Medium body. Very pleasant.

Awesome stuff. Great to have a properly done hefeweizen from the source. Cloudy orange pour with velvety head and lacing. Light banana, light clove. Great balance, soft carbonation. Light sweet finish. Tap at Churchkey.

@ Vino Bellissimo / Lima OH --- Clear deep orange amber, no head after 30 seconds, no lace. Taste is sweet malt that exposes a little biscuit and a little clove in the palate, before turning very slightly bitter with a bit of buttery prune in the finish. Pretty uncomplicated, somewhat light,

4oz pour at Churchkey. Inky orange with almost zero head. Nose has a lot of spice, some tropical fruit, pineapple, mango. Flavor is the same. All pineapple, clove, bubblegum, hay. Sweet finish.

Bottle: The aroma consists of apple, faint banana, grain, and a touch of wheat. It pours a mostly transparent dark amber with a fizzy two finger off-white head that quickly fades to a thing ring around the edges of the glass. There’s barely any lacing. The flavor starts with with moderate apple, some residual sugar, and caramel. The finish has some light graininess, faint bubblegum, and the slightest hints of citrus. It’s medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a somewhat sticky mouthfeel. Overall, I love Hefeweizens, but this simply isn’t what I’m looking for in the style. It’s way too sweet and doesn’t resemble a Hefeweizen at all.
