4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draught at Brauhaus Binkert/Main Seidla in June, 2013: Pale straw yellow. Extravagant Spalt aromas (lemon balm, fresh cut grass, honeysuckle) and new mown hay leap from the glass. Quite perfumey, as well. Soft carbonic prickles. Thinnish body. Flavors unfold with a tangy lemon succulence and a captivating wave of complex hoppiness ranging from spicy and herbaceous to stiff and woody (heh). Notes of lemon candy and bright nectar-laden richness accompany a considerable amount of grassy candied fennel seed refinement which harmonizes with the remarkably polished and vivid pils malt character. Gorgeous texture to the grain, as well. Burst after burst, the hops continue with breathtaking luster and extraordinary lengthiness as dabs of lemon oil add another dimension. Stunningly flavorsome and lip-smacking, with complete and utter emphasis on the hop flavor and minimal albeit adequate bitterness. Finishes with a flower petal softness and a pillowy, mouth-filling caress of starchy pils malt which unleashes a host of idiosyncrasies like piecrust, crisp cookie, cracker and perfectly sweet lemon cake with chef-grade pastry cream and all. A downright stylish pils that’s right in my wheelhouse with its full-spectrum of refined hoppiness and sublime malt character. Absolutely clean as a whistle and endlessly slammable. Shame about the good but relatively dull bottles (purchased at the brewery) Mike and I encountered, so it’s best advised to drink this at the source or risk being not so impressed.
