COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Some may call this a malty double IPA, some a hoppy barley wine. We prefer that it not be classified. We think of it, simply, as our strong winter ale. Intense hop aromatics and flavor (think pine, candied orange) blended with just enough malt sweetness to balance out the palate. Vitals: Color – Mahogany ABV – 9.1% O.G. – 1.080 Malt – American 2-Row, Marris Otter, Victory, Carapils, Caramel 80, Midnight Wheat Hops –Centennial, Simcoe, Cascade, Falconer’s Flight

Pours. Nice glowing light copper orange. Aroma has lots of hops lemongrass. Taste is hoppy and butter. There is quite a bit of reddish malt in there this rudes the line between the low end of a double IPA a barleywine and a red ale. More caramel malt comes through as it warms a bit. Decent but I’ve come I expect a bit more from this brewer.

As far as the description goes - this is a lot closer to a malty double IPA than a hoppy barleywine. I love this style: basically a full-bodied, well-balanced, strong IPA. Plenty of depth with citrus and spruce hops, and some malty sweetness.

From notes, consumed on 4/11/13. Bottle poured into a tulip. Pours an amber/ruby brown color with 3 fingers of off-white head, moderate lacing. Aromas of pine, caramel, nutty notes. Tasting notes of caramel, pine, citrus, hoppy bitterness. Warm finish. Medium body with a semi-dry finish.

500 ml bottle thanks to WillRunForBeer. Pours dark golden-orange with a big fluffy head that fades slowly and leaves awesome lacing. Aroma is strong pine, orange, and tropical fruit with some sweet bready/caramel malt. Taste is bitter pine and citrus peel up front, pretty intense. Finishes with tons of caramel and toffee. Creamy mouthfeel that turns oily then sticky. My kinda beer. Love it.

Early pours from the bottle are burnt mahogany, yet mine from the end is cloudy orange-gold. Strange.

Smells hoppy. Not citric; plenty of earthy quality, minimal bitterness. Smooth, clean, and enjoyable.

Aroma of ropey hops and sweet sugary malt. Opaque orange, looks the part for barleywine. Heavy handed, blunt bitterness, semi-sweet, chewable malt content. Certainly feels strong, but not overly heavy bodied. A quality beer for malt and hop lovers alike.

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2014 500ml bottle pours dark semi-clear toasted red with 2 finger head. Nose is fruity sweet malt, grapefruit, and lemony pine. Taste is malt-heavy, sweet caramel, some medicinal fruit and biscuity notes with a balanced grapefrut and piney lemon hop profile. Finish is very bitter with orange peel and pine notes. Good, very malt-heavy if you like that style of IPA.

Bottle. Nice finger of slightly off-white foamy head, deep reddish copper hue. Lots of nice citrusy hoppiness in the aroma, slight wood, pine and a firm but not sweet maltiness as well. Flavor follows quite similarly, nice bright hoppy bitterness, juicy citrus fruits, pine, and a dry lacquer finish. Medium to heftier body with vibrant carbonation.

bottle pour dated 12-20-13..medium caramel like color with some slight haze and particles abound...nose is hop forward with grapefruit taking lead above all else..mouthfeel is fairly medium bodied for the abv and this is not your typical offering..really is a hybrid of a dipa..barleywine and who knows what else..all together an interesting taste with honey..citrus pithiness and herbal tea qualities thrown into the mix..finishes with some bitterness..lacing all the way around and a very fresh..well crafted offering....not typical of any style but it sure is tasty..only gripe is the price point..definitely way too high..do what’s right and how about starting some 4 packs with 12 oz offerings or increase bottle size to justify things..
