Some may call this a malty double IPA, some a hoppy barley wine. We prefer that it not be classified. We think of it, simply, as our strong winter ale. Intense hop aromatics and flavor (think pine, candied orange) blended with just enough malt sweetness to balance out the palate. Poured from a 500 ml bottle thanks to lukaduke. Thanks man! Pours a semihazy copper with a white head of bubbly foam. Aroma is dank pine with a spicy sweet malt backbone. Taste is a clean hop bitterness with lots of pine. Really nice and clean. Super drinkable, especially for its gravity. So good.

Pours a deep, dark amber color. Murky. Aroma is definitely on the drier hop side. Hops, pine, grass, leaves all come to mind. Heavy palate. Flavors are of bitter sweet hops, orange, and some earthiness. Leaves a bittersweet dry hopped finish. Very good stuff!!!

Purchased from New England Wines & Spirits. $7.04 (I think) for the 500 mL bottle. I may need to reexamine the receipt. Somewhere around there...
To oversized snifter, it pours a partially clouded skin-tinted burnt umber/dark mahogany with which a sudsy vanilla creme head 1 finger in length stood. Head retention was lovely.
Aromas of Carapils, Belgian yeast, bubblegum, maize seeds, wheat flour, coconut, and the tiniest hint of mint sage.

Tastes the same with the addition of autumnal leaves, Pacific Northwest hops, cotton, baby spinach, young oak, and sweat. Caramelized onion, sea salt, and cloves experienced by swallow.

This is one of the brews you can’t hate. This isn’t really my thing, but I still find the complexities inherent in this offering, to be fascinatingly baffling.
Yes, there are herbal notes, but they’re not what I would consider screamingly distracting, and it also has a huge array of flavors to dive into, so I can’t hate on it. Well, sure I could (everyone can), but I don’t anything more to add than what is already expected of me.

Pine needle and lemon zest aroma. Deep auburn, clear, thick yellow head. Rosehip, maraschino cherries. Medium body, soft, smooth. This is absolutely a DIPA, plain and simple, but a very well made one. Just because it is well balanced and has a little color doesn’t make it any other style. DIPA.

Bottle from Binny’s in Chicago. Was tucked away...bottled 10/2015.... but still excellent. Pours a foggy dark orange with thick tan had...quickly recedes to reveal a nice lace and hoppy nose. Taste is caramel, bready with resin and spruce....mouthfeel is medium to full body; thick...bitter edge....wonderful.

Bottle at home for Saturday night. Pours fine reddish with beige head. Wonderful nose of tropical fruits and some malty goodness. Tastes of pineapple, mango, red fruits, malt, molasses, some dough. Fine bitter and yet sweet palate. Delicious..

Bottle as a trade extra dated 010215. Pours hazy deep dark orange amber with a huge off white and yellowish creamy fluffy head. Nice aroma with the characteristic Maine yeast, floral hops, light citrus sweetness, some bready malt. For the ABV, the aroma comes off very delicate. Nice. Flavor is nicely bitter citrus rind, floral flavors, lemon peel, some pine, sweet malty bready backbone. Medium bodied, medium carbonation with just a touch of prickle, dry bitter, dank. Basically a DIPA here bordering on very light barleywine, but comes off relatively light on the palate. This is really nice.

Color of caramel with a lacy head, smells hoppy with notes of citrus and a caramel maltiness. Starts out with a citrus hop flavor with a bit of an earthy taste to follow. Not as malty as I was anticipating. Earthy flavor lingers long after the finish and kinda kills it for me. It’s not a bad beer, but I was personally expecting more out of something from Maine Beer.

Bottled 01/02/15. Pours a ruby amber copper color with a creamy beige head. Aroma is hop forward, citrus, lemon, orange, and lots of malt sweetness. Caramel. Flavor is hoppy and malty up front. Lemon, orange, pine, malty caramel. Bitter but also prominently malty, honey almost reminiscent of oak finish. Palate is pleasant mild carbonation. Drinks like a malty IPA.

Bottle at home, courtesy of Lukaduke. Thanks!! Pour is deep, hazy amber with a big cream-colored head and sticky lacing. Big hoppy aroma - pineapple, grapefruit, orange peel, some caramelized sugars, light bread, roast, and mango. Taste is brown sugar, grapefruit peels, some oranges, resinous, grass, sweet caramel, and toasted bread with a bitter finish and a touch of heat on the backend. Full mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Nice mix of malt and hops.

500ml bottle from Binny’s Lakeview. Pours a dark Amber color with a big fan head and lots of lacing. Aroma is hoppy, some pine, some orange citrus. Medium to heavy with creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweet, malty, lots of caramel, toffee, toast, big pine bitterness, some orange, grapefruit hops, with a bitter, pine finish. Too malty for a DIPA, but not quite a Barleywine. Either way, it’s pretty nice.
