COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our American-style stout aged on organic vanilla beans. Intense notes of coffee and dark chocolate lead way to subtle notes of natural vanilla. Flaked oats generate a silky mouthfeel.

Drunk from a Sam Smith english-style pint glass. Pours the color of strong French press coffee with a beautiful thick fluffy head that reminds me of dirty roadside snow. Strong aromas of vanilla extract. Weighty and slightly viscus on the palate... The best way I can aptly describe the overall experience of this beer is to admit that it evokes some deep-ceded childhood memories. As a kid we all had one friend who’s mother always ended up chauffeuring you to soccer games. You spent long drives in the unvacuumed third row seats of a minivan while she chain smoked and drank way too much Dunkin Donut’s French Vanilla. And then your team lost.

Bottle picked up at a Binny’s in Schaumburg area, pours nearly black with a thin light brown head, aroma is crazy, tons of roast and chocolate with a good amount of coffee and vanilla all come through, but weaved perfectly together, the flavor has a heavy chocolate and roast front end with some bitterness of coffee in the finish, nice notes of sweet vanilla but not overly sweet, really enjoyed this.

On tap at Maine Beer Company. Pours an almost black brown. Beans and coffee on the nose. Very light bodied, but still good flavor. Nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500ml bottle pours dark brown black with light edges and 2 finger creamy tan head. Nose is earthy vanilla coffee, almond, roasty baker’s chocolate. Taste is on the lighter body side, roasty bitter dark cocoa and crisp vanilla. Finish is earthy roast coffee bean, vanilla cream, bitter cocoa.

Dark black. Awesome malts, hint of vanilla, just enough hops to keep it interesting. Well done.

Bottle. Pours very dark brown and airy, tan cap that settles to a thin blanket quickly. Aroma is fragrant coffee, dark chocolate, and very gentle vanilla. Taste is bitter sweet. Muddied earth, creamy mouthfeel, medium dry finish.

Bottle. Pours a near a near black with a active, bubbly, tan head. Aroma is large and roasty. Dark chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. Pretty tasty. Taste is a balanced bitter. Starts with some big, dark chocolate them moved into some vanilla and coffee, then ends in a fine, espresso bitterness. Very nice. Medium-full body with a medium carbonation. Clean in the mouth with a bit of a creamy texture, soft carbonation, and a dry finish. Overall this is a great stout. Big roasted notes with a subtle undertone of vanilla. Really very good.

My 300th review!! Bottle. Pour is a dark brown/black, with a thick tan head, done sediment, good lacing. Aroma us slight coffee, dark chocolate, smoke, a hint if vanilla. Taste is bitter chocolate, licorice, a hint of coffee, a hint of smoke maybe. Not getting the vanilla beans at all in the flavor. Finish is nice and dry, perfect mouthfeel. Good dry stout but the vanilla is hard to detect.

Sweet, for sure, but the vanilla is nicely-utilized. This is a ’full-mouth’ beer, meaning at least for me that the beer challenges all parts of the palate, so there is a nice drying bitterness to this. Like all Maine Beer, this is balanced.

I poured a 500ml bottle into a tulip glass. It was bottled on 7/15/14 and cost $6 ($0.36 per ounce).

Appearance: Dark black body, completely opaque, no sediment or carbonation visible. Pours to a large, brown, frothy head which laces and retains extremely well.

Smell: Slightly mild, but with notes of coffee and dark chocolate.

Taste: Maine Beer Company is known for their hoppy beers, so I was quite eager to try a malt-forward beer by them: Mean Old Tom; a stout aged on natural vanilla beans. From the description and recipe I was expecting a big, bold stout, but what I got was a rather nominal brew that happens to have some sweet components to it. Not that there’s anything wrong with how this turned out, since the result is still a more-than-solid brew.

This beer is brewed with a fairly standard malt bill with the addition of some flaked oats, though I wouldn’t classify it as an oatmeal stout per se. It’s lightly sweet up front, with an almost cola-like taste. Through the middle there’s some coffee and roasted malt flavor and bitterness with a sweet vanilla taste on the back end. It creates for a milk chocolate flavor, but it’s entirely too mild. A bit of an oatmeal sweetness can be found lurking in the background, as well as an English-like mineral quality I’ve never found in any other beers from this brewery. I’d imagine an imperialized version of this brew would be intense and amazing, but what’s here is nice and satisfying.

Drinkability: Getting through a glass of Mean Old Tom was no challenge whatsoever. The mouthfeel is thinner than you’d expect, though it’s smooth going down and finishes clean. It probably should be a bit bigger in body than it is at 6.5% ABV, as this drinks like a lighter pub-style stout. Works fine as a liquid dessert or a standalone beverage.

Pours black. Aroma and taste are vanilla, roasted malts, and chocolate. Full flavored.
