COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bar Harbor's Original Pale Ale. This deep golden brew is as ambitious as its alpine-path namesake. A bottle or two of Precipice will help you get close to your nemesis.

Bottle sampled on 8/16/06: Pours a hazy golden bronze with a thin, wispy white head. Aroma has a mild piny hop presence and some pale maltiness. Body starts with a mild pale maltiness turning more dry, lightly earthy and bitter toward a thin, bland finish. A typical APA.

tap at the brewpub - Pours gold and has a mild citrus aroma. The flavor is mild to moderately bitter with a hint of citrus and a weak malt profile. It’s light bodied and mediocre.

Braudog (4607) - Hampton, Virginia, USA - AUG 22, 2011
Draft at the brewery/restaurant. Quite dark for a pale ale, and a full 4 shades darker than their IPA. Very little aroma to suggest this is an American style pale ale, and no body to support the English moniker either. There’s a huge head at first, but I credit that to pour air handling in their tapping system. While mostly unoffensive, the beer did evoke a bit of a soapiness that was off-putting, but generally this was drinkable without any notable character. (#4221, 8/22/2011)

eaglefan538 (2735) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - AUG 16, 2011
Draft at the brewpub. The color was a light orange (darker than the IPA), the head ok and lacing ok. The aroma was earthy and spicey along with some toffee and caramel maltiness. The flavor followed along with some melons and floral notes. The mouthfeel was full for the style, maybe a bit too full for high pale ale drinkability. A decent brew.

(Rating #1797)

hazy orange color with frothy white head. aroma of tangerines, mango, and pineapple. The taste was the same with nice bitter orange finish. The carbonation is kind of fizzy but not too bad. Decent.

Tap at brewpub. Cherry-apple malt aroma. Red amber color with small head. Sweet-tart cherry malt flavor with mild hips finish. Nice body - very unusual - a bit light on the hops.

Bottle from the brewery and Porterhouse, Thanks Kevin! Another Maine rarity! Nose of citrus hops and a little malt; amber with a big long lasting straw colored head; flavor shows a bit of diacetyl mixed with some weak malt and hop bitterness.

Any first impressions?
-A boastful head of large bubbles collapses into the clear blood orange, lacing discreetly.
-Earth-laden oranges and various citrus fruit swim freely, foreshadowing dryness.
-Leafy, wooden hops evolve into floral and fruity (oranges) dominions.
-The frothy carbonation expands on the palate, a little too much for the style imho, even redolent of the most lively Belgian ales.

What if you dig deeper?
-A drying effect follows the resinous hops in the finish.
-The lean maltiness is shy on the flavor front.
-Is this on the verge of developing tartness, or is it just the hop profile which is very citrusy?
-A quirky, flavorful pale ale which could benefit from some malt character, but which can nonetheless satisfy a fleeting hop crave.

Bottle; no date.
