2 x 500 ml, probably from bottle, in the restaurant of Best Western Hotel des Nordens, Flensburg. Hazy brown colour, moderate off-white head. Nice aroma of banana and cloves, also notes of brown bread. Distinct Weissbier flavour of banana and cloves, medium sweet. The notes of brown malts are more subdued, but contribute to a full flavour profile. Low bitterness, as typical for the style. This is a very pleasant and drinkable Dunkelweizen.

Pours a hazy reddish brown with a big frothy white head that has great retention. Aroma of clove phenol’s, banana esthers, wheat and grain. Taste is a good amount of banana and clove up front balanced very well with a good caramel, chocolate and munich malt backbone. A medium-full bodied beer with great aroma and a good presence of wheat making it easy to drink. Excellent yeast used in this beer that experienced a very well lagered process. Don’t drink lagers very often but when I do this is what I need.

Cloudy hazy dark copper brown colour with muddy sediments; Three finger head with beige foam which lasts for about 2 minutes; Small lacing and active carbonation; Aroma of banana, vanilla, cloves, malt and spices, the aromas become more pronounced as the beer warms; Light and muted sweet taste of banana, caramel, malt, yeast, light cloves, citrus and faint herbs; Mid to light body, thin palate with mouth feel being light malt and then grass hops throughout; Minimal but detectable hoppiness, not much of a finish and no tartness; Slightly dry after taste, very easy and pleasant to mouth.

Comments: This one has the right looks and very drinkable, especially without the odd phenol element as in Maisel’s hefeweiss. Compare to other dunkelweiss I’ve had, however, this one seems to miss the essential roast malt’s aroma and taste - there’s no roastiness in smell, nor any chocolaty notes in the taste. If this is a hefeweiss I’ll give it a score comparable to Paulaner’s, but it’s a dunkelweiss, and it fails to deliver so it‘s rated as such. Another middle of the road pack.

A style which I’m not too familiar with, but basically if the eyes are closed this comes across as an acidic heffe with a very very slight chocolate aroma. Not too acidic, though. A bit of roast mixed with the dry acidity in the finish. Cool!
