Happy Birthday Trappist Ale Rules’ This beers for you. Re-Rate 08/27/02: I stashed this beer away 2 years ago today as the world renowned ’Beer Expert’ Michael Jackson said. This beer after aging for a year, or even better yet two years increases in flavor, complexness, ’yada yada yada’.
Well ’Mikey Baby’ let’s see. The pour is a clear amber, the head is off white, the lace in thick sheets to coat the glass. Nose is deep malt, citrusy, brandyish, a tad or hint of bubblegum, sweet. Front is sweet, the top is light, the finish is quite acidic, very dry, and a nice hop bite, also a hint of fusel alcohol in the moderately bitter aftertaste. Ranks a respectable #280 on my current 1000 beer list.

Oily citrus fruit and flying yeast flakes…Apricot honey and no effervescence whatsoever…Something weird is going on here…
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DrBeer (825) - Solna Stockholm, SWEDEN - JUN 16, 2002
Yellow hazy brew. Nose with fresh hoppy tone and a hint of candle wax.
The flavor is very almondy. OK beer

This beer has quite a bit of bang for its alcohol content. There is some honey and malty spiciness, but it all comes together with a fabulous crisp belgian yeastiness. Some oxidized hop flavors in the background, but understandable due to expiry date almost 2 years past. Very enjoyable.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Belgik (72) - Sterrebeek, BELGIUM - JAN 7, 2002
Loose off-white foam over copper colored yeast-cloudy brew (the ’procedure’ calls for swirling the bottle dregs into the glass!)
Rather bland aroma at first, at most a yeasty white-beer type nose, evolving into a nice medium-intense nose, with well-balanced yeast-hop-malt aromas.
Nice foam in the mouth, medium-bodied and, again, nice balancing act between the -not too high! ABV- hops and malty/yeasty tastes.
The magic is in the balanced, if short, aftertaste.
Ale needs not be ’strong’ to be perfectly enjoyable, and this beer has quite some finesse!

I had never heard of the beer or the brewer, but I must give my compliments. This is a good beer.

UPDATED: JAN 20, 2007 I like the cork version better. It seems to age better and has a creamier head that is Fred-esque! Very hoppy and aged quite well. I had one that was a year and a half old. Beautiful!

Difficult to classify: triple? golden ale? something ele entirely? Who knows, but I still really enjoyed this ale. Light, fluffy body and yeasty nose and flavors, and a great bottle-conditioned twang.
