bdigital (585), Ft Wayne, Indiana, USA Mar 2, 2008 Bottle: Courtesy of thedm and hotstuff...I think. If I’m wrong on that I’ll fix it. Anyways, pours a cloudy yellow/gold color with a foamy white head. Tart, yeasty funk aroma with some mild citrus and spice. Heavily carbonated, spiced citrus funk flavor. Had some peppery notes on the finish. Decent, though I’m not wowed by it. Boutip (2333), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Feb 21, 2008 Bottle: Poured a hazy deep golden ale with a small bubbly head with average retention and no lacing. Aroma of light sweet malt notes with some weird ester or maybe it’s the yeast but something is surely different. Taste is sweeter and lighter then expected with some sweet malt and light yeasty bready finish. Body was full with some low filtration and some great carbonation. Alcohol is not apparent which is quite surprising considering the 11% contained in this beer. I am glad I tried this but considering the price tag it is unlikely I will try this again. (Rating #1447) RblWthACoz (963), Brooklyn, New York, USA Feb 3, 2008 Pours a clouded straw with a big white head. Lots of lacing on the way down. Flavor is very champagne like and smooth. But there is also that level of Belgian ale that is oh-so-obvious. Lots of sugar. Good bit of what seems like hops. Feel has a lot of carbonation to it and it feels pretty soft on the mouth. Definitely drinkable, but more so a sipper. I have been keen on finding another good biere de champagne after trying Deus, and this is the first one that has made it worth the money. I kind of feel like this is Duvel on speed. That consistent and steady ride that doesn’t really take you anywhere mind blowing, but it’s still pretty damn good.
BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Feb 1, 2008 Bottle provided by mmtmatrix. Poured a hazy yellow-gold color with a thick white head. Sweet, yeasty aroma. Slightly sweet, with some decent fruity esters and and a nice, dry, yeasty character and slight funk. Light and crisp. Very different than what I would usually consider a Belgian Strong, but it was pretty pleasant. Thanks to matrix for bring it, because the price tag is a bit to spendy for me. WISEGUY572 (1244), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 27, 2008 Well, yeah. Me too. Not much to add after the previous two reviewers weighed in. My bottle was three years old. Pours with a bright golden body and a huge white head, more like a great Belgian strong than a champenois. Nose of yeast and candi sugar and malts; taste of yeast, bread, sugar, pepper and spice. Good mouthfeel. Complex and enjoyable beer but not what i expected from the bottle. More like a great Belgian saison or French biere de garde; not much like a Prestige or Deus. unclemattie (2370), Georgia, USA Jan 23, 2008 750ml bottle. Pours Hazy golden yellow. Big fizzy white head. Brut aroma, dry and spicy. Big florals, lots of perfume, some sweetness and little yeast in the nose. Flavor is of a nice bready malt. Hints of citrus, lemon tartness. Very very dry (Brut) finish. Very pleasant and easy to enjoy. thornecb (1735), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Jan 1, 2008 Pours bright gold into a pilsen. Fluffy bright white head fills the glass and top hats the rim. Malt and candi aromas. Crisp with a dry, sweet malt front to back and a peppery finish.
