Imperial is inspired to the dark and strong ales once brewed in England and exported to Russia to warm the Zars’ cold winters. It is a very dark beer, almost black, with a full body and notes of coffee, chocolate and liquorice. Long, bitter finish. Can be paired with dark chocolate, best paired with a good cigar and a quiet conversation with friends

Bottle 0.33L. Dark brown body with average, frothy, tan head, mostly diminishing with some lacing though. Heavy malty (caramel, roasted, coffee) aroma with notes of dark fruits, chocolate and some licorice. Heavy sweet flavour with moderate-to-heavy bitter character that grows towards the finish; salty notes of licorice in the finish. Full body with creamy texture; soft carbonation.

My Bottom Line:
Generous roastiness and dark chocolate morphs into leafy hoppiness and fruity yeast esters in this sizeable Imperial Stout.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the pure black .
-Coffee and chicory also appear in the first half.
-Malt character is dense.
-This one’s a tad too fruity yeasty for my tastes in the style.

Black colour, tan head. Sour aroma, chocolate, coffee, mocha, somewhat vinous. Sweet flavour, light sour notes, malts, milk chocolate and cacao. Medium to full body, sweet finish, chocolate, malts and sugar. Don’t know if the sour notes are supposed to be there, but they really add some depth to the flavour profile. Love this beer, especially considering the ABV.

10/VIII/13 - 75cl bottle from Gradi Plato (Rome) @ RBBSG II, my place - BB: III/2012 (2013-751)

Clear dark brown beer, small beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: chloride, sourish, weird and soapy, some cleaning product, caramel. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: mocha, dark chocolate, bit sourish, coffee, cocoa powder. Aftertaste: pretty sour, coffee, sugary touch, overripe fruits, bit dirty, burnt toast. Probably aged it for too long. Have to admit, I didn’t check the alcohol % on this one, and just assumed it was a 10% imperial stout. My bad.

Bottle from Ale & Hop, Barcelona. Black with a thin beige head. Fruity with coffee and chocolate in abundance, hints of pears. Some roasted dryness balances the sweeter fruit. Very good.

Bottled 0,33L. Very dark brown color, good and bulky creamy nut head of long duration. Roasty and bitter chocolate nose, aroma is sweet coffee, braced malt, roast wood. Sweetish start mouth, mellow taste, very round palate with decided aroma of dark chocolate, smoked wood and little coffee final.

Sampled from bottle @ RBBSG II. Opaque dark brown to black color, small beige head. Smell and taste malts, a slight touch of sourness but also a hint of sweetness, some light to moderate roastyness and some coffee. Medium body and carbonation.
