3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: OCT 1, 2011 Rerate, 22oz bottle, purchased at Mammoth. Upped a few points; no astringency, nothing but a delicious brown porter-ish beer.
12oz bottle, courtesy of acrdz. Thanks, Mike! Pours a dark, clear chewy-brown color; khaki-colored head with patchy lacing. Lots of nuttiness, dried red fruits, and peanut shells in the aroma. Medium mouthfeel: tea-like malts and nuttiness; slightly astringent, chalky, tannic; solid nut character, with some fruitiness coming through. Medium finish, showing tea, toasted malts, and dried fruit.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours a dark, slightly red tinted brown with a light tan head. Aroma was surprisingly good; nuts, caramel, fruit, with a light touch of butterscotch. Flavor had a good amount of coffee, more than expected. Alot of nuttiness and cocoa as well. A hint of fruit. Overall it was pretty tasty for the style.

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 ounce bottle from Nugget in Davis, CA. Aroma is a pungent roasted coffee one. There is is a little sweet chocolate thing going on as well as some chalk dust smells. I really can’t get past the chalk smell. Virtually transparent dark brown/mahogany body with a fluffy tan head. Has a nice sweet, chocolate flavor to start, which becomes a bit metallic and toasted/roasted in the middle. Lightly bitter to finish. Drinks pretty well. Still can’t figure out the chalkiness in the nose. Thankfully, it’s not in the flavor.

Nice dark brown color with reddish hints and an offwhite head, I thought that this beer was pretty tasty.
The aroma was of coffee and some chocolate notes, the flavor was dry with nutty roastiness. Very tasty.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
06-Aug-08 (12-oz bottle: Purchased 12-May-08 for $1.89 at Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA) The nose features sweet, candy-bar style chocolate but also offers roast, toasted nuts, coffee and earth. Intensely nutty flavor, with plenty of dark roast and medium-sweet chocolate, but a fairly ashy and coffee-like finish. A touch of sourness creeps in from time to time. Medium in body, soft and smooth carbonation, but some ashy astringency in the dry finish. Medium-brown in color, and good clarity yields transparency through the center, The inch-tall, dark-tan foam stand settles to a wide ring, leaving stray strands of lace on the glass. Not quite as rich as some of the best brown ales, but still quite enjoyable.

Tap. Pours deep brown with a creamy beige head. Nose was full of nuts and roasted matts. Flavor was much of the same, everything Newcastle should be.
