2.3 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20 FlacoAlto (3155) - Tucson, USA - OCT 19, 2007
Pours with an easily, fat-three-finger thick, darkish, tan colored head. The beer is a very dark, brownish amber color, but shows a brilliantly clear, concentrated ruby color when held up to the light. The aroma is nice and malty with a mix of hops, fruit and darker grain aromatics. Aromas of berries and toasted grain / light coffee notes are noticeable at first, but then a particularly sharp, almost weed-like, herbal hop note comes to the fore. Initially the aroma was quite inviting, but that was all of like two seconds. This really green, overly vegetal, just bad aroma is here somehow and it is hiding all of the rich malt notes that I know are here somewhere. It smells something like an overly moist, just starting to rot, heap of weeds.
The taste is sweet up front, with a nicely caramelized layer of malt sugars. Flavors of berries and raisins are brought out by the sweetness. The beer is still fairly light bodied for something titled a double nut brown ale, but still has some fullness to it. The beer finishes with some toasted malt notes, which try to dry out the finish, but are not really successful at it. Somewhere in the finish that vegetal note from the aroma is noticeable, but luckily it is fairly subdued here (if you can taste without breathing it is not noticeable at least). Rancid broccoli, or some flavor like that, becomes noticeable in the finish if you drink this normally (with both nose and mouth).
If it wasn’t for that bad aromatic note, this would be quite enjoyable. Unfortunately it effects not just the aroma, but the flavor too and is too much for me to really enjoy this brew.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 joeneugs (1618) - Livermore, California, USA - JUN 2, 2012
Bottle. It pours a dark brown color with a nice khaki head. The aroma has notes of cocoa powder, tobacco and freshly turned earth. The flavor is similar and pretty dry with spent coffee grounds. It’s smooth on the palate with noticeable bitterness balanced nicely by some dirty roasted malt.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bytemesis (161) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - APR 30, 2012
On tap at Yosemite Lodge. I have to be careful not to overblow this review since I had mine after a long hike, and it was a most welcome beverage. Pours dark brown, almost black, with a medium off-white head and good lacing. Strong aroma of roasted malts, coffee, and a little chocolate. Taste mimics the aroma, with a creamy coffee mocha flavor. Slightly watery, but otherwise an extremely good offering.

Yes. Body of a heavy porter, but the nutty goodness of a brown. This beer is huge, but drinkable. Lots of nutty, woody, earthy brown ale notes in here, with a little booze tinge to warm. I love it.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 peteinSD (632) - San Diego, California, USA - MAR 24, 2012
UPDATED: MAR 31, 2012 Bottle. Dark brown pour with a frothy tan head. Aroma is lighr coffee, roasted malt, and a light nutty character before a slight sweet malt finish. Taste is light coffee with chocolate and a somewhat generic nutty brown ale flavor and some minimal roast. Mouthfeel is light and lacking definition. Not bad but the flavor profile was a bit loose.

Great coffee aroma to this beer and a smooth finish. I dont think i agree with the bartenders description of a "Guinness like" beer, but very good. I would definitely have another.

Bottle. Pours with a deep, hazed, chestnut hued brown body. Near black. A small off-white head that is somewhat slow to fade. Aromas are nutty, sawdust, cola, brown sugar, hazelnut, really dry, brown malt (seems). Dry, roasty, leathery, tobacco. Flavors are roasty, leathery, nutty, chocolate, fudge. A bit of coffee. A bit of an odd, lactic twang. That said it is tasty. Really malty, brown sugar (yet dry). Brown malt? Overall its pretty tasty. Lighter carbonation. Dry for what it is, lighter bodied. Good and nutty, roasty with lasting duration of flavors.
