Mammoth Hair of the Bear Dopplebock

Deep brown/ruby with an off white head. Aroma is caramel, lightly smokey, dried fruit, plums, chocolate. Taste is caramel, light chocolate, some toffee, light alcohol- fairly watery for this big of beer.

Bomber poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of carmel, molasses, dark fruit and light earthiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, molassess, light earthiness and a hint of fruittiness with a smooth lingering molasses finish.

This is one of my favorites from Mammoth Brewing Company. This beer is on the darker side and has a lot of flavor. Definitely one to enjoy and not chug.

On tap at the brewery’s tasting room. This is probably the second best dopple bock I’ve tried! (first is Sudwerk) It had a nice carmel maltiness. We were tasting quickly so I cannot add a lot of detail.

Bomber, several years old. Poured clear honeyed amber with a short, but well-retained tan head. The aroma picked up aged, smoked caramel and molasses with earth and essence of alcohol around.. a lot of deep, unexpected orange notes on the back of the nose.. just OK. The flavor found tangy, sour orange notes throughout.. old caramel and molasses again on the middle.. dry-roasted, smoked malts on the edges, and they stuck on the finish.. some tobacco back there too.. again OK. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation on the palate.. wasn’t expecting the sourness, but I think it was a byproduct of age.. I’d like to try a fresher sample.

Pour a mahogany color with a tan head. Nose of chocolate and roasted caramel. malts. Full body with smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is fruity, chocolate, and roasted malts. Finish is dry. Alcohol not obtrusive. Good brew.

Dar brown with a creamy tan head. Roasted grain and malty aroma. Tastes of roasted grain alcohol and caramel with a tangy hoppy finish.

Sampled at the brewery. Great malty aroma with hints of vanilla and caramel. Nice looking dark amber with a small head. The flavor is very malty and sweet with a little touch of hops. One of the best dopplebacks I’ve had.

Mammoth Brewing Hair of the Bear Pours coppery brown with a low tan head and mild retention. Oily appearance with minimal lacing. Aroma is proper Dopplebock with notes of apple, raisins, honey and a clean malt note. Flavor is a little metallic (early when cold) and dark fruits. Alcohol became more pronounced as it warmed. Notes of caramel or toffee as well. Pretty nice.

A: The pour is a dark amber color, almost brown, with a thin off-white head to go with it. S: Smells surprisingly good for a Mammoth beer. Cherries, plums, raisins, and maybe a couple other fruit notes are present along with some caramel and toffee. Maybe a bit on the roasty side for a doppelbock, though. T: Some earthy hops to go along with the sweetness. Quite heavy on the toasted malts, but still sweet. Brown sugar, toffee, hearty bread, and quite a bit of cherry. It is decently bitter, come to think of it. M: The body is medium and the carbonation is low to medium. D: Nothing terribly exciting, but this is incredibly good for a Mammoth beer. I don’t know if I’d have it again, but if forced to drink something from them, this would probably be it.

This is an ugly, cloudy beer. It looks more like amateur homebrew than a professionally-made beer, especially for a lager. The aroma, however, is quite nice and malty. There is zero hop presence and the body is very light for the style, though the alcohol is apparent while the beer goes down. The flavor is malty, bready, and nice (though it tastes more like a brown ale than a doppel bock). The carbonation is far too low for the style. I would describe this beer as "meh." I wouldn’t go out of my way to look for it, and I wouldn’t buy it, but I would enjoy it if it were offered to me.
