To put it simply, “Rauchbier” is the German term for smoked beer, a style seldom seen today. Although smoking is a technique usually reserved for food, malt smoked over beech wood had been an important brewing ingredient for centuries until modern malting methods were developed. This garnet colored lager is brewed in the classic German style offering an intense smoky character while maintaining a smooth malty flavor. Best if enjoyed with your favorite smoked or slow roasted foods.

On tap, Smoke ’em if ya Gots ’em Fest 2010. Pours a clear amber body with a small off-white head that had some decent retention. Very traditional appearance. Really nice Rauch nose, great campfire smokiness and smoked meats with some slightly sweet munich malt. Nice big campfire smoke flavor with a sturdy toasty munich malt sweetness. Medium bodied with soft gentle carbonation. Surprisingly great for a beer from Manayunk!

Dark brown pour with a light amber hue ... tan head aroma of smoke .... light malt but tons of smokey taste that dominates ... intensely smoked indeed ... not much else to write about this one light malt lots of smoke period.

On tap at Manayunk. To start with, I love the clever name. Pours a clean light brown, orange hints, and a medium sized white head. Awesome smoke, bacon and campfire, up there with some of the Schlenkerlas. Medium bodied, malty and more smoke. Really tasty. More smoke on the finish, light toasted malt and a faint bitterness. Really good smoke. This alone was worth the visit, and was the only thing I drank after finishing off the sampler. So good.
