COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Belgian Dark Strong Ale
The Belgian inspired ale series continues with our Belgian dark strong ale. A delicate fruit character from our Belgian yeast strain combines with numerous dark specialty malts to create flavors of plum, raisin, and fig. Both strong and malty, this mahogany colored ale could be the perfect elixir for a cold winter night.

The one I was most looking forward to... wish it had been better. High carbonation and the same acidic quality I found in Yunkelweizen. More sweetness - dried fruit - and a darker color. This was better, but still not what I had hoped for.

Pours light amber with thin off-white head and minimal lace. Nose of raisin, caramel, pepper, banana. Medium body, slightly sticky. Not too boozy for the abv.

Dark amber, medium off-white head, spotty lacing. Dark fruits, winter spices from the yeast, a bit sweet, medium bodied, moderate carbonation, lingering finish.

On tap at brewery. Dark copper color with minimal head. Aroma is light flavor of fruit, toffee and some alcohol. A bit flat which minimizes hops against malt.

Draft at Craft Ale House (and yes I double checked the beer). The pour was turbid dull muddy brown with minimal off-white head. Nose was funky yeasty malt, dark fruit, hops. Tasted like a Belgian quad, with fruity yeasty rock sugary malt, mid-palate fruit, mild finishing hops, and a high complexity level. This one was very good.

From a growler from Whole Foods. Pours a dark brown with a ton of fluffy head. The head sticks around a few minutes but eventually dissipates, leaving mild lacing. Aroma of funk and brown sugar. Very good and light mouthfeel. I like how it isn’t too heavy for a dubble. Candy sugar, light hops, Belgian yeast taste. One thing that isn’t present is alcohol. I have a VERY hard time believing this is almost 10%... It drinks waaaaaaaaaay to easily for that. Too light bodied, not sweet enough and there’s just no alcohol taste... Either way, a very good beer. Glad I got the growler to myself!

Tap at BCWC 2010. Pours a deep amber almost brown with a thin head. Aroma is nice Belgian spicy yeast, gets a bit harsh as it warms though- vanilla, and Christmas spices almost- toast, nuts herbs earthy and fruity esters. Flavor is earthy nutty light roast some chocolate, lots of spice phenol and good raisin and sugar date flavors- caramel and molasses sweetness as well- moderately dry finish. Not bad.
