Ale Brewed With Molasses & Ginger
Blackstrapped Ginger Stock Ale
Our longtime brewer, Jon Hill, drew the short straw at the Manly Beer Club meeting. His charge: make a beer with two distinctly assertive flavors that must fight it out - yet work together. He opted to brew with raw blackstrap molasses and snap it back with fresh ginger root. Some called him crazy, to others he was quixotic, but to most he was Jon.

Inspired by the photo of the great Molasses Disaster of 1918, this beer would need time, but with patience it would be a good disaster - as indeed it is. This fabulously complicated beer starts you with a ginger nose, rolls you through a pronounced body and finishes with the tar-like sweetness of molasses (not unlike black licorice). This beer can be aged to allow the two profiles to mellow out further if it suits your taste.

Smells a bit like a syrupy dish at a chinese takeout place. A bit of char, sweet molasses, and a bunch of ginger. Taste is the same, kind of syrupy but not really all that sweet. I dunno, it could and probably should be much better than it is.

22 oz. bottle. Holy shit, there is a lot of molasses and ginger in the aroma. Translucent dark brown color with a little ruby mixed in. The head is practically non-existent. Wow, this aroma is pungent, as stated before. It carries so much molasses, sugar, maple syrup, and ginger aroma it is ridiculous. This is a very nice aroma, but it is a little caustic on the nostrils. Wow, it has a nice bitter flavor, but I believe this is due to the molasses and not the hops. The ginger is very subtle, and only shows itself at times. The molasses though is used quite well. It provides, well, a sweet molasses flavor that lingers The molasses also contributes to the texture, but not as much as I though it would. This beer pops all over your taste buds. Fairly nice spice beer, in terms of the ginger. The excitement is starting to fade on me, and this seems to be just a ginger and molasses drink. Overall, it’s fairly good, but I guess I got too excited.

(22oz bomber thanks to thirdeye11) A lot of spices. Reminds me a lot of Divine Reserve 9. Brown color. Ginger, cloves, pepper. I could go for a touch sweeter but I like this a lot.

(22oz bomber) deep brown pour, rich and clear in appearance. Ring of khaki-colored bubbles. Nose of ginger, chocolate, caramel, molasses, and licorice. Taste of molasses, licorice, unsweet, ginger, dry spicy cinnamon. Finish is dry, alcoholic, but quite flavorful.
