Ale Brewed With Molasses & Ginger
Blackstrapped Ginger Stock Ale
Our longtime brewer, Jon Hill, drew the short straw at the Manly Beer Club meeting. His charge: make a beer with two distinctly assertive flavors that must fight it out - yet work together. He opted to brew with raw blackstrap molasses and snap it back with fresh ginger root. Some called him crazy, to others he was quixotic, but to most he was Jon.

Inspired by the photo of the great Molasses Disaster of 1918, this beer would need time, but with patience it would be a good disaster - as indeed it is. This fabulously complicated beer starts you with a ginger nose, rolls you through a pronounced body and finishes with the tar-like sweetness of molasses (not unlike black licorice). This beer can be aged to allow the two profiles to mellow out further if it suits your taste.

FROTHINGSLOSH (4988) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 5, 2013
Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very dark brown color with a small foamy tan head that faded and left no lacing. The aroma was ginger powder, faint toasty malts and a touch of vague fruits. The flavor was ginger powder, toasty malts, a tart and chalky presence and just fell off to water. Short watery ginger finish. Thin and watery body. Disappointing.

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of malt, molasses, light ginger, and slight caramel. Poured brown/ruby/deep amber in color with a small, creamy, dense, tan/brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Hazy. Sparkling. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of malt, molasses, ginger, light chocolate, and slight spice. Medium body. Slightly sticky texture. Average carbonation. Medium sweet, malt, molasses, ginger, chocolate finish is lightly dry. 7.6%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

Backlog of ratings. Thanks to someone at one of bu11zeye’s tastings. The smell is very spiced, molasses, sweet, sugary, ginger. The look is is brown in color, off white head. The taste is all over the place, molasses, spiced, sweet, and licorice.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Shop Rite - Hoboken, 4/22/11

Aroma: The nose has some spice, there is some molasses present but not much ginger
Appearance: It pours a medium brown color with minimal beige head
Flavor: The taste is alright, lots of molasses, its sugary, very minimal ginger presence here as well
Palate: This one has a medium body, a decent mouthfeel, but it fades pretty quickly
Overall Impression: This stuff was alright. I mean it has a lot of sugary notes and some spice, but there isn’t a ton going on beyond that. The ginger really isn’t present in this one at all. I wouldn’t rush out for it again, but it wasn’t terrible either.
