Previously brewed by Burtonwood for Ushers (Refresh UK).
Manns Brown Ale has been brewed in Britain since 1902, originally by Thomas Wells Thorpe who was the head brewer of Manns in London. He envisaged the opportunity to move away from IPA and brown stout and create a new beer, claimed to be "the sweetest beer in London". Brewed to the original Manns recipe, this 2.8% ABV ale is now brewed by Thomas Hardy at Burtonwood, it remains the most widely distributed brand of the original style of sweet, low gravity brown ale.

500ml bottle. Pours a clear deep chestnut brown, with a small beige head, which does not last all that well nor leave much lacing. The main aroma is prune, with some hints of vanilla and biscuity malt. Very mild grass and spice hops lead into a slightly weird blend of prune and banana. The banana persists through to the finish, where it is joined by some faint, doughy biscuit malt. This is not the worlds most flavoursome beer, and what flavour exists is not terribly inspiring. A pretty missable beer.

Appearance is coca cola brown, ruby tinge, no head at all really. Aroma- sweet malts, slightly vinegary, dark cherries, raisin. Taste- dark malts, caramel, dry roast towards the end, coffee undertones, dark fruit hints. Ok for the abv.

Dark ruby color with a fine tan head. Light toffee and malt aroma. Light and thin toffee flavour. Also a bit sweet. Not my cup of ale.

Bottle: A no nonsense brown ale. Not much to smell but a little biscuit and chocolate on the palate but maybe a bit watery which youd expect with the percentage. Still, always cheap for just 1 in my local supermarket and I buy it from time to time.

Old style brown ale. 2.8% ABV and feels it. No real depth of flavour or aroma. Looks good for a short time with it being very, very dark but you know the beige head is too thin to last. Only 1 for a 500ml bottle so no real complaints but not really my thing.

McTapps (4993) - Ruhrcity, GERMANY - AUG 4, 2014
Bottle from Asda in Eastbourne. Pours out in a deep dark brown colour with low head and medium body. Aroma of barley, leaves and malt. Taste of light malt, nuts, caramel, leaves and light raisins. Flat and boring finish. Refreshing but just nothing special.

Shared with McTapps and bought in ASDA, Eastbourne. Dark as the night with a guinnes-style foam. Aromas of malt, nuts and dark chocolate. Superbly quaffy and heavily drinkable. Thumbs up.

Clear but very, very dark beer with a beige head. Aroma is light malt and sour fruit. Flavour has a bit of malt, chocolate and caramel in there but the initial hit is mostly sweet fruit. Its not the strongest-tasting beer but the balance is quite pleasant and Id say its one of the nicer sub-3% beers Ive had.

Bottle - Deep ruby red with a thin brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, vanilla and roasted malt. Taste of chocolate and vanilla followed by roasted malt, light smokiness, light bitterness and medium sweetness. Medium body, medium carbonation.

Bottle 500 ml at home, into a Guinness glass, ABV 2.8% Pours a very dark mahogany brown coloured beer, with a small tan head on top, with a good density, good retention too, light lacing left on the glass. Aroma has caramel, milky chocolate, light floral. Taste is sweet, malty with hints of milky chocolate, iron. Thin body with low carbonation resulting in a kind of watery beer, but very drinkable. Overall okay.
