February 2012. Bottle. Aromas of dark malt, chocolate and spice. Color is hazy brown with a tan head. Flavors of brown sugar, spice and dried fruit. Pretty good dubbel.

75cl bottle from Cornelius. Great label! Clean design, and lo a clean and silky pour. Slight but right cream lacing and thin head over lush brown mellow chocolate malts. Very smooth and even light for the style and abv. Good stuff from this emerging UK brewer.

750ml Bottle: Aroma of malt, chocolate, Belgian yeast, light dark ripe fruit, slight anise, and some dust. Poured a muddy brown/very deep amber in color with a large, creamy, dense, rocky, tan/beige head that diminished slowly and lasted throughout. Cloudy. Sparkling. Possible particles. Excellent lacing. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of malt, chocolate, Belgian yeast, slight anise, and some sugars. Medium to full body. Lightly sticky, then lightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, chocolate, Belgian yeast finish is lightly dry. 8.5%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

750 c&c from City Beer. Pours dark brown with a 4 finger creamy beige head (chalice). Roast malt aroma. Med+ body. Flavor is chocolate, treacle and spicy. Not to mention roast malt. The flavor is fairly intense. Woke me up! As the foam reduces it seems to release a hint of pine. There’s sugar in this, but there’s a lot of bitter to balance. Fairly complex.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 01/20/2012. This brew pours dark brown with a medium thick and frothy light beige head that dissipates steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of cocoa, yeast and malt. Medium body with an unbelievably chocolatey presence for a Dubbel. Notes of malt and yeast in the background. The finish is sweet with a baking chocolate aftertaste. Interesting take on the style and a decent beer overall.

Bottle - 750mL corked and caged. Dark cola colored brown with a foamy tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, burnt caramel, dark fruit and dusty yeast. Taste is toasty malt, dark fruit, caramel notes, floral hops, yeast, ashy notes and chocolate. Body is medium with a strong bubbly carbonation. Ends with more chocolate, roasted malt, floral hops, dark fruit and caramel.

750 bottle from City Beer. The cork hit the ceiling, so I quickly directed a small gusher into a glass. The beer is dark brown with a large tan head that subsided pretty fast. There is a slighlty metallic brown ale aroma that worried me. However, it turned out to be a good brew with lots of chocolate, treacle and perhaps some candi sugar. More like a stout than a dubbel.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, label says best before 05 07 16. This brew (and brewery) was a new arrival at a local store, and one of my friends said it was pretty good so I figured I’d try it! Served in a Dogfish Head Signature glass, the beer pours dark brown with a couple inch frothy tan head. Head retention is excellent, and there’s a good amount of lacing left on the glass. The brew smells like bittersweet chocolate, dark fruit (cherries, raisins, red grapes), caramel malt, molasses and some candy sugar. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there’s also the addition of some sweet spice as the brew warms up more. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit creamy and has high but soft carbonation. The soft carbonation helps make this easy to drink. I think this is a good overall brew, it’s definitely worth a try. But it is pricey at $16.99 a bottle.
