3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Diogène (990) - Mirabel, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 26, 2009
Bottle. Dark mahogamy with a medium off-white head. Ok retention and good lacing. Aroma is toffee, molasses, and a (almost burnt) bit of liquorice. Flavorur is mostly toffee, molasses, brown sugar and liquorice with a long sweet and slightly bitter finish and some alcohol.. Full body and low carbonation. A very good scotch ale.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy murky amber color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention and no lacing. Aroma of toffee and caramel with light notes of alcohol at the end. Taste is a mix between some toffee and deep caramel malt notes with some light residual sugar. Body is full with limited filtration and low carbonation with some alcohol showing. Interesting though I like my scotch ale with more peats malt; noticeable alcohol is also a bit too apparent for my taste.

341mL bottle from a trade with Lubiere, thanks Luc. Pours a dark mahogany with virtually zero head. Aroma is very sweet, lots of chocolate, peat, caramel, toffee, earthyness, and a little booze. Interesting. Flavour is almost like port, very full-feeling and syrupy sweet, tons of fruity esters, cherry, apples, plum, and a ton of residual sugar. Almost rummy. Boozy but not in an assertive way. Kind of weird, though everything seems to work well together. Interesting example of the style. Underlying earthy dryness to it is the closest thing to providing balance, though it’s not cloyingly sweet. Quite tasty and enjoyable after dinner.

UPDATED: JUL 7, 2009 Straightforward Scotch Ale. Dominant caramel taste, cookies, shy leafy hopping, some subtilities (wood, dry fruits, smoked malt). Decent, that’s it. I didn’t know it was from Bieropholie. Sad beer when you think about Mackroken Flower. It is nevertheless better than their Scotch Ale they brewed recently. Bieropholie is going down a little, these days; they are not as amazing as they used to be. 7-3-7-3-14. RERATE: Aged for 7 months or so. This was already uninspirired and uninteresting; now it’s got that nasty tomato taste and it is overly sweet and with very little bitterness, that get lost anyway in that pretty crappy brew. Bad and sad; mad from paying 3,49$ at Grand Duc (only place to find it in the Montreal region)

Bouteille 341ml.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 Glouglouburp (4558) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAY 17, 2009
In short: Lots of caramel and some dark grapes juice. That’s it. Bland below average scotch ale.
How: Bottle 341ml. Consumed when about 5 months old
The look: Pours a brown-ruby body with no head 30 seconds later
In long: Nose of caramel and dark grapes. Taste is just the same. Caramel and more caramel, dark grapes juice, maybe a little prune. Some burnt brown sugar and a little maple taffy. Under-carbonated. Hops are discreet to say the least. That’s about it. This is a very boring beer. Label says this is a beer by “Brasseurs Illimités”. I think Brasseurs Illimités is to brewers what Alan Smithee is for movie directors.
