3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle [22oz] shared with HogTownHarry & garthicus -- c/o HogTownHarry. Pours a dark amber-brown with an average size semi-lasting frothy beige head. Nice fruity aroma along with caramel malt, some chocolate, toffee, wood, spices, alcohol and more. Flavour of dark fruit, slightly sweet and malty, along with yeast and light hops. For a 9% beer the alcohol is quite well hidden. Medium bodied. This is very good stuff!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz bottle shared with blankboy and garthicus. Deep ruby pour, looks thick, average frothy tan head. Solid caramel malt toastiness, plenty of alcohol, waves of green grassy/resin bitterness - yummm. Taste - all that, but hot DAMN, raisin/prune and way more sweet tastly malt. Love it. Thick, a bit acidic, strong alcohol, frothy and airy, a long boozy/malty/fruity finish. Different, I really like it.

Some fruit n the nose, heavy sweetness and a bit harsh in the mouth. Bittersweetness coming through, not as smooth or as rounded as the description suggest. A5 A3 T6 P3 Ov11 2.8

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber purchased a year ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($5.49). Pours a dark brown with bits of red and two fingers of fluffy light brown head. Aroma of figs, raisins, and other sticky overripe (even rotting) dark fruit, caramel, molasses, a hint of booze, and perhaps some faded hops. Flavor also of sticky dark fruit, berries, toffee, and some spice; also some roasted malt notes emerging late. Surprisingly, this is far from being overly sweet, and the sweetness actually fades into the finish. Nice English-style barley wine. (188, 518)

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bomber, 2009 vintage, picked up at The Bottle Barn in Northern CA.
Pours a deep, dark copper color that is completely opaque with only faint dark orange/mahogany edges and a 1.5 finger frothy yellowish beige head. Pretty good retention, slowly fading into a nice lasting ring that leaves sporadic spots of lacing behind.
The nose of this beer is still surprisingly hop forward with hints of earthy pine and dank, resinous oils as well as subtle hints of citrus fruit balancing out the sweeter malt notes. Earthy and lathery with lots of caramel and toffee as well as some biscuit and faint dark fruit, mostly fig and raisin. Slight alcohol but doesnít smell overly boozy.
Medium bodied and again, this beer is surprisingly still very hop forward. Unfortunately the hop profile isnít as complex as the aroma suggests. Earthy and bitter with lots of dry piny flavor but there isnít any of the sweet citrus character that I was expecting to add depth, complexity or balance. Underneath, there is a nice leathery malt backbone with prominent caramel flavor as well as hints of toffee, biscuit, raisin, fig, and grape. The ABV is well masked with subtle boozy sweetness but not much in the way of heat or warmth in the finish.
Overall, this beer is decent and pretty quaffable but it isnít as complex or balanced as I hoped with the strong hop presence overpowering the other flavors a bit too much.
