Bomber purchased a year ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($5.49). Pours a dark brown with bits of red and two fingers of fluffy light brown head. Aroma of figs, raisins, and other sticky overripe (even rotting) dark fruit, caramel, molasses, a hint of booze, and perhaps some faded hops. Flavor also of sticky dark fruit, berries, toffee, and some spice; also some roasted malt notes emerging late. Surprisingly, this is far from being overly sweet, and the sweetness actually fades into the finish. Nice English-style barley wine. (188, 518)

Bomber, 2009 vintage, picked up at The Bottle Barn in Northern CA. Pours a deep, dark copper color that is completely opaque with only faint dark orange/mahogany edges and a 1.5 finger frothy yellowish beige head. Pretty good retention, slowly fading into a nice lasting ring that leaves sporadic spots of lacing behind. The nose of this beer is still surprisingly hop forward with hints of earthy pine and dank, resinous oils as well as subtle hints of citrus fruit balancing out the sweeter malt notes. Earthy and lathery with lots of caramel and toffee as well as some biscuit and faint dark fruit, mostly fig and raisin. Slight alcohol but doesnít smell overly boozy. Medium bodied and again, this beer is surprisingly still very hop forward. Unfortunately the hop profile isnít as complex as the aroma suggests. Earthy and bitter with lots of dry piny flavor but there isnít any of the sweet citrus character that I was expecting to add depth, complexity or balance. Underneath, there is a nice leathery malt backbone with prominent caramel flavor as well as hints of toffee, biscuit, raisin, fig, and grape. The ABV is well masked with subtle boozy sweetness but not much in the way of heat or warmth in the finish. Overall, this beer is decent and pretty quaffable but it isnít as complex or balanced as I hoped with the strong hop presence overpowering the other flavors a bit too much.

Good! Has a malty Dark fruit nose. Taste is a blackberry brandy with a slight alcohol burn. Hops are sudtle, and its not too sweet. I like strong hop presents in a Barly W. which this does not have but its also not too cloying. So its still a good balance. Sweet and bitter dry finish. Pretty good.

Cloudy brown pour. Cinnamon and cloves over booze-soaked fruit on the nose. Nice. Flavor is a bit disappointing. More boozy, and the warmth fades away. Lingering citrus rind aftertaste that canít cover the alcohol, although a toasty caramel note does appear that helps balance it out.

Dark garnet body with a small eggshell head that left some spotty lacing. Aroma is filled with caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla. Flavor shows lots of dark fruit along with toffee and honey. Not extremely complex but dangerously drinkable. Sweet but not cloying. Pretty good.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2011 Sample at the brewpub. The beer is a reddish-brown color with a medium beige head that diminishes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malt and hops. Rich body with flavors of sweet caramel, grainy malt and resiny hops. The finish is hoppy with a fruity aftertaste. Good Barley Wine overall.
