"i really like most Marin beers, and even a bad barleywine is a pretty good beer overall, but that’s just what this one is. thin and relatively flavorless in comparison to better Bw’s. There’s quite a few I can think of superior to this one."

Bottle at Jan & Charlottes tasting, Ulfborg, Denmark 09.04.11 cheers Jan & Charlotte Murky chestnut brown with a light beige head which soon disappears. Some fruit n the nose, heavy sweetness and a bit harsh in the mouth. Bittersweetness coming through, not as smooth or as rounded as the description suggest. A5 A3 T6 P3 Ov11 2.8

Hazy golden-tinged brown, dense tan head. Enticing aromas of burnt sugar, toffee, faint candied fig, and faint woody hops. Big rich malty palate, with flavours of demarara sugar, toffee, fig paste, dried cherries, and a solid woody hop finish. Excellent!

Bottle at the “Drink for Charity” event at Rattle & Hum. Pours a clear brown with a thin white head. Plums and prunes mostly on the nose, with some sweet malt. Light to medium bodied. Finishes with a nice bitterness and a really nice caramel note. Pretty good.

22 oz. bottle from Total Wines in Phoenix. Pours a somewhat cloudy reddish amber with a medium beige head. Notes of caramel malts, dark and dried fruits (dates, figs, raisins), brown sugar, pine resin- hits all the right notes. Medium-full bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sticky, chewy mouthfeel. Big, tasty American barley wine. Really good. I need to get my hands on the other versions.

Any first impressions?
-A ring of foam crowns the burgundy velvet.
-Profound red fruit candy are embedded in the caramel maltiness, as smoking earth is diffused throughout.
-Fruity jujubes lather the palate, a veritable desserty treat for the sweet tooth.
-The low carbonation and rich maltiness go hand in hand, securing this barley wine’s place into late evening digestif territory.

What if you dig deeper?
-Herbal, resinous hops make sure it all never gets cloying, and appropriately reduce the sweetness level of the finale with their leveled bitterness.
-A flavor profile comparison with Green Flash 2nd Anniversary Barley Wine yielded a surprising depth of links.
-Strawberry licorice and maple whirl around the tongue to the pleasure of all excited tastebuds.
-If this top notch barley wine’s quality is constant (and I have no reason to believe it isn’t), I think it deserves more attention.

Bottle; no date.

Tap @ Hamiltons, San Diego. Pours dark brown, beige head. Aroma is malty, caramel, dark fruits. Taste, dark fruits - fig, caramel malts, thick mouthfeel, some good alcohol with a fruity finish, some brown sugar. One fine tasty barley wine.

Bottle shared by someone at "Drink for Charity" event at Rattle N Hum. Deep brown beer with heavy garnet highlights. Sweet caramel and rich chewy sweet fruits. Rich sweet hoppiness, light caramel and brown sugar. Intensely sweet chewy maltiness and a sticky resiny finish. Lightly hoppy and piny with a lingering fruitiness. Classic Californian barleywine, and a fine example at that.
