On tap at Toronado’s 2008 Barleywine Festival. This was surprisingly dark brownish-red with a thick golden-tinted head. Aromas were very sweet and malty with of course an assault of spicy, fruity hops. Malt dominated the flavors initially, with loads of sweet caramel, brown sugar, ripe apples... finishing up with the bitter citrus/grapefruit rind quality of the hops. Sugary soft and syrupy mouthfeel but finished very astringent.

Poured from tap at Marin Brew Breast Fest an inky reddish-brown with the smallest of off-white heads. The aroma hit me with lots of subdued fruit sort of a plum wine with vinegar and soy sauce. The flavor was soy saucy with red jammy wine, plums, figs, dark chocolate. Mild bitter finish ending quickly. Easy to sip, I enjoyed this one. I’d get it again.

Bomber from the PP Bottle Shop, my stomping grounds. Extremely reddish, deep amber hue to the color. A frothy beige head is produced on the pour, but settles quickly to microbubbles and white lace. Sweet and fruity aroma of raisins and plum, with lighter tones of cinnamon, coconut and nutmeg. Nothing stands out in the flavor, just a straight blend of pleasant caramel malts, a touch of pine wood and more cinnamon in the finish. Maybe some candy sugar flavors as well. Good resiny bitterness, but fades rather quickly. Lacks complexity, but still a nice sipper.

Hazy golden-tinged brown, dense tan head. Enticing aromas of burnt sugar, toffee, faint candied fig, and faint woody hops. Big rich malty palate, with flavours of demarara sugar, toffee, fig paste, dried cherries, and a solid woody hop finish. Excellent!

Bottle courtesy of dahammer at Terrapin opening. 1999 vintage! Aroma was of very mild hops, malt, and musty(?) fruit. To me, fruit was almost like raisins and prunes. Taste was similar with a heavy malt presence. Fruit and booze were here as well. I need to try this fresh to compare, but I thought this was excellent and mellow. Poured amber with a small head. Body was smooth and lightly carbonated.

Amber body is slightly hazy with a medium sized creamy, beige head. The nose is toffee, pine, raisins and brown sugar. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter with caramel, pine and golden raisins. Medium/full body is soft with light carbonation.
