COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine is a version of our Old Dipsea Barleywine that has been aged in Bourbon Barrels for about a year. This ageing contributes wood and bourbon flavors to the beer. The micro-oxygenation that occurs in the barrels mellows and smoothes out the high alcohol as dried and over-rip fruit characters evolve. Sometimes we add wild yeast for another layer of complexity.

2008 Vintage: Aged in 12-year Old Fitzgerald Barrels for 10 Weeks. *Unfiltered.
2009 Vintage: Aged in 20-year Old Fitzgerald Barrels for 10 months - bottled 01/09/09

Bottle - 2011 vintage. Pours hazy ruby chestnut with a small brown head that dissipates fairly quickly with good lacing behind. Aroma is bourbon, toffee, vanilla, oak, a bit of funk in there as well. Flavor is medium sweet, medium bitter, a faint note of distracting tartness. Full bodied and hot. Good, not great.

Bottle from a trade that was consumed for breakfast post Hunahpu Day in Tampa. Good morning! 2012 bottle. Snifter pour was extreme muddy brown with a thin slightly off-white head. Not much in lacing. Serious aroma of dark fruits and candies alike. Some booze on the nose but not bad. Also graham cracker and Nilla Wafers. The taste was bold. Serious dark fruits like prunes, dark candied sugars, heavy malts, graham cracker, Nilla Wafers, oak barrel, and booze. Full body, very mild carbonation. FInish is somewhat booze but well balanced and smooth. Creamy mouth feel. AWESOME B Wine.

Bottle from 2012:   Deep burnt brown sugar in color, thin sudsy off-white head, little lacing.   Huge sweet caramel biscuity aroma, bourbon, vanilla, graham cracker and dark pitted fruit.   Big sweet brown sugar and bourbon flavors up front, vanilla, graham cracker, caramel, toffee, and marshmallow.   Very warming, dark pitted fruit seems to come out as this one finishes.   Not all that bubbley, a little flat, but smooth and sweet.   Lingering dark pitted fruit, aged caramel, and bourbon.   This is one complex Barley Wine, and perhaps so far from the norm that its hard to say its actually a Barley Wine any longer.   Tasty as tits tho!

UPDATED: NOV 13, 2013 On tap at Hamilton’s, pours a deep dark mahogany with as small beige head. Aroma of vanilla notes, caramel, and light bourbon. Flavour brings out quite a lot of bourbon barrel notes, vanilla, and caramel. Very complex, boozy and vanilla-like. An elegant, slow-sipper. Excellent stuff.

Bottle (2012): The aroma consists of moderate chocolate, oak, vanilla, bourbon, and toffee. It pours a dark brown with some orange transparency when held to the light. It has a one finger khaki head that fades to a thin film. There is some sporadic webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate, toffee, caramel, and a touch of molasses. The finish has moderate vanilla, light-moderate bourbon, oak, light maple syrup, and just a hint of mint. It’s medium-full bodied with mild carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. Overall, an excellent example of what I like in a barrel aged Barley Wine.

10 ounce sample on tap at Preserve in Winters, CA. 2012 vintage. The aroma has some peaty bourbon and sweet vanilla primarily. Some molasses essence is also present. Pretty quaffable. Opaque ruddy mahogany body with a small, yellowish head present. Starts sweet, sugary, and malty. Almost a bubble gum flavor, followed by a little buttery diacetyl, too. Nice bourbon flavor in the middle. Finishes sweet. Ethanol is hidden well. Pretty tasty.

2012 bottle, purchased at BeerCraft in Rohnert Park and shared last night. Pours dark amber with minimal head. Aroma of caramel, vanilla, bourbon. Tastes sweet with practically no bitterness, but surprisingly not cloying. Right up my alley for what I like most in a barleywine.

22. 2012, opened August 2013. Thanks, G! Pours a clear medium amber with bright golden brown edges. Very scant light tan head that does not stick around for long. Mild sweet nose, showing bourbon and some sweet heavily caramelized malt. Sticky thick full body. Caramel, toffee, molasses, apricot, vanilla...sweet but not cloying. Definitely very little hop presence. Very nice but not a bruiser and not overly developed in any one direction--very balanced. Good stuff.
