"it does have a nice flavor and a creamy texture, but calling it an imperial is a bit of a stretch. judged as a straight stout, though, itís very good. well balanced and flavorful."

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber shared. Poured dark brown to almost black with mocha colored head. Aroma deep and rich roasted dark malts. Hints of chocolate, coffee, licorice and oats. Amazing aroma. This flavor is outstanding deep dark roasted malts heavy body chocolate, licorice, and oats. This beer rivals breakfast stout from founders. Excellent.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Siper, particularly for such a low ABV. Awesome coffee aroma, followed thru by a roasty flavor with a hint of chocolate. Just a drip of sweetness. Not bitter. Dry finish. Recommended!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
June 10th, 2012 - The first Marin beer to really leave a deep, sudsy impression on me was the San Quentin Breakout Stout. No doubt the style itself is responsible. I tend to lean to darker beers when brew shopping. But this Marin stout exhibits a lot of complexity and detail that I didnít detect in a couple of their other beers, such as their IPA. Lots of oatmeal stout style sweetness hits the nose on the front, and the light earthiness of button mushrooms is also present. What these softer smells belie is a hardy, savory stout in the flavor. Rich contours of barbecue and ham have a strong presence in this beer, with ample notes of bacon and maple, almost like an exaggerated novelty bacon based beer, but without the gimmick and the gross. This is strong, but still speaks the language of beer, and tastes good going it too.

Excellent nose with a lot of nutty, chocolate malt. Very well balanced taste - neither excessively sweet nor excessively bitter.

2.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle. Pours that is a shockingly, keyboard destroying gusher. $4.99 bomber I have had for a while. Took some time to get a pour that wasnít all head. Aromas are of roast, dark chocolate and metal. Iodine, currants, dark fruits, lightly acidic aromas. Flavors are of metal, bitter leather, roast, iron, horribly metallic, rotting dark fruit. Lively carbonation. Clearly infected, Iíll re-rate, but I am not happy to the damage that this did to my key board. Disappointed to say the least. Generous rating.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nitro at Beachwood Seal Beach. Clear deep red highlights on near black. Nose is savory, steak, soy, smokey. Dark chocolate milkshake. Taste is thinner, harsh Scotch barrel and burnt red apple. Huh, started strong but ended weak.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours motor oil black with a foamy tan head that dissipates to a ring quickly; sparce lacing. Aroma is toasted marshmallows, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and a touch of burnt toast. Taste is sweet with undercurrents of bitterness that come out more in the aftertaste. A bit thin for a stout, smooth carbonation. Decent brew. On a side note, I did not notice that the bottle is labeled "Live Ale - Keep Refrigerated!" and I kept it in my basement for a good 2 weeks before drinking it at about 58-60 degrees. I donít know if lack of refrigeration affected the quality. In any case, cold stout is just weird.
