COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named for the church located behind us on West 24th Street. Black, roasty and dry, but velvety smooth at the same time. Tis always darkest before the dawn. Contrary to most American heavy and robust stouts, out version is lighter in the body with a dry finish.

Draft sample. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Good roasted malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth dry texture with flat carbonation. Moderate toasted sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of average duration. Solid drinkable dry stout.

Returning to Market Garden after a trip to the West Side Market next door I was ready to check out a number of their beers. Picking just a handful can be tough so I settled on a sampler flight. This dry stout was one of them and nice for the style. While there are better ones out there many come from breweries which have had more than a year to establish themselves.

Aroma / Appearance - The reddish brown body and ivory head play well against each other. Fluid with hints of carbonation, the resulting aroma is a mix of black coffee, licorice, and baker’s chocolate.

Flavor / Palate - Roasted straight black coffee, chestnuts, and hazel tease the senses and warm the tongue. The fluid mouthfeel transitions to a dry finish that tickles the palate. The ash and mild chocolate touches add to a well done and mostly balanced beer. If you are in the area you have to give this one a try.

Sample at the brewpub on 8/29/11. Brown to black pour with a medium tan head. Typical dry stout aroma of roasted malt and a slightly metallic nitro note. Roasty malt flavor with a bit of chocolate.
