@restaurant Nolle in Berlin. Dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of dark caramel, a little metal. Clean palate of dark caramel, light burnt toast. Finish is clean and dry.

On tap at a cafe in Berlin. Pours deep brown with a pillowy, dimpled, off-white head. Fairly presence burnt aroma, a little wheat, and a slight metallic undertone. Mild nutty roastiness up front follows through to a clean and slightly grainy finish. Light on the palate with prominent carbonation. An easy drinking dark beer, although I’ve had better versions of the style.

Bottle. Nose is sweet and inky, not roasty but has a bit of rubbery dirtiness. Dark dirty brown with a tan/light-brown creamy head. Lightly bittersweet taste with just a touch of astringency, feel is tongue-cleansing and a little rubbery, medium-lightish body has notes of cocoa and very faint ash, not really any chocolate or berry. Low acidity. Enjoyed it enough, but not a sparkling example of style.

Koelschtrinker (12187) - Köln (Cologne), GERMANY - MAY 17, 2011

Tap @ Alt-Berliner Biersalon. Pours a dark dark almost black body with a thin red hue and a small everlasting off-white head leaving lacings. Nose is extreme low - almost non excising but if I look deep i can perhaps sense some hints of licorice and burned malts but thats more of a guess. Low carbonation quite thin-bodied. Tastes are dominated by black currants, caramel with a thin and bitter finish. Not to exciting, but not bad.

Draft @ Zur Letzten Instanz in Berlin. Nice looking brew, coveted it from across the room. Dark brown with a garnet hue and a stable tan head. Metallic aroma. Flavors also metallic but drinkable and dry. Nice dry and toasty character and a sweet finish. After visiting a string of bad brewpubs, this was the best beer of the day.

On tap at Alt-Berlinche Weissbierstube. Slightly sweet, malty, nutty. Lots of grain. Pleasant, old fashioned no nonsense beer. A fine excample of the style.
