This beer has a blend of British and American influences, hence the adapted crest from the gates of Greenwich hospital, showing the two flags. India Pale Ale is traditionally strong and hoppy. This contemporary interpretation of the style is made with a blend of 7 dark malts, English and American hops.

The aroma is hops with some background sweetness. The beer is black with a nice tan head which retains well. Whilst the aroma is average the flavour is excellent. Dark chocolate and liquorice with a dry and medium bitter finish. This is the first time I have tried a Black IPA and hopefully it wont be the last.

500ml bottle from my local M&S store: poured into a tall UK pint sleeve on 10th July 2015. Really dark, black in fact, the head a full tanned affair. Over roasted malts in the nose and taste, smokiness feel to the malts in the aftertaste along with a hop bitterness which sits with the bitterness from the burnt malty flavours. Interesting and I quite liked it, the alcohol being well hidden by the strong flavours within the brew.

Dark brown in colour, with a big, but short-lived, tan head. Grainy aroma, with some chocolate, toasty malts and touch of leafy hop. Flavour had more roasted malts, no sweetness, some decent bitterness and more hops in the finish. Enjoyable.

initially faintly hoppy but basically a stout with a dark roast coffee malt finish quite quaff able tbh.although the Black IPA claim is highly mis leading its a bloody stout ffs!!

UPDATED: MAY 14, 2015 Pours black with a full foamy tan head. Some earthy notes on the nose. Taste is earthy, coffee, ash with wood. Interesting but not the best black ipa I?ve had.

Bottle from M&S. It pours black with a decent light tan head. The nose is rich roast, dark chocolate, coffee grounds, earth and some toasty pine. The taste is bitter, hard roast, charred wood, ashy, mild acidity, piney notes, light soap and coffee grounds with a toasty finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty decent black ipa.

Bottle. Near black with a cream, bubbly head. Aromas are nutty, earthy coffee with blackberries and yeast. Dark, nutty chocolate with mellow grapefruit and melon. Flavours are earthy coffee with pithy grapefruit and sudsy notes. Dark berries with spritzy yeast. Dark cherry with a pithy finish. Decent.

Opaque black beer. Slightly lively. Beige frothy head. Toasted malt and a slight twist of citrus in the scent. Flavour has a few things on, with coffee-flavoured malt meeting the same zesty twang from the aroma along with a bit of bitter hop. Itís a touch on the watery side and the flavour could definitely go a bit more oomph, even if only one of the flavours was stronger, but itís a solid enough black IPA.

£2.40 from M&S, so not cheap. Faint whiff of citrus hops at the start and after that itís a stout all the way. Nice smooth bitter finish. Notably good feel, slightly slick. Pretty good.

A glistening black colour, with garnet highlights. This beer is dominated by roasted malts, but has a bright hop flavour as well, with hints of grapefruit, pine and floral flavours. A pleasing bitterness from the hops. An interesting mixture, something between a stout and an IPA.

Bottle. Hazy golden body with a thin white head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of cereal, peanuts, metal and lemon. Flavour of lemon, underripe pineapple and bay leaf. Dry, bitter finish. Medium body with a light, oily mouthfeel. Lively fizz. Tastes better than the aroma suggests.
