This beer has a blend of British and American influences, hence the adapted crest from the gates of Greenwich hospital, showing the two flags. India Pale Ale is traditionally strong and hoppy. This contemporary interpretation of the style is made with a blend of 7 dark malts, English and American hops.

The aroma is hops with some background sweetness. The beer is black with a nice tan head which retains well. Whilst the aroma is average the flavour is excellent. Dark chocolate and liquorice with a dry and medium bitter finish. This is the first time I have tried a Black IPA and hopefully it wont be the last.

A glistening black colour, with garnet highlights. This beer is dominated by roasted malts, but has a bright hop flavour as well, with hints of grapefruit, pine and floral flavours. A pleasing bitterness from the hops. An interesting mixture, something between a stout and an IPA.

Bottle. Hazy golden body with a thin white head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of cereal, peanuts, metal and lemon. Flavour of lemon, underripe pineapple and bay leaf. Dry, bitter finish. Medium body with a light, oily mouthfeel. Lively fizz. Tastes better than the aroma suggests.

500ml bottle BB Dec 2015. Black with a red tinge, big foamy tan head. Aroma is earthy, smoke, a little metallic, some dung. Body is medium, soft carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is malt-forward, ashy, some background pine and jasmine, astringent pot pourri, dry finish. This doesn’t quite have the hop character of a black IPA - more of a stout. A decent one though.

Bottle from M&S. Pours black with a light tan froth. Nice fruity hop aroma. The taste starts with juicy citrus, light spice and pine. Bitter coffee and chocolate follows. Fairly tasty beer. A bit on the thin side perhaps, but light and refreshing for the style.

Mildly hoppy aroma. Good dark colour. Not too fizzy from the bottle. Mildly chocolate aftertaste ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Marks & Spencer, Manchester. Extremely black with a thin off-white head. Has a hoppy tropical fruit aroma, with a fairly fruity taste too, although the darker malts are more evident here.

Deep black pour with a tight dark brown head. The aroma is a bit hoppy with some nice roast flavour. A bit of pine and some woodiness. There is also a bit of nice pine and some roasted malt on the finish. Moderately hoppy with a bit of lingering pepper as well as a touch of licorice. Middling black IPA but still okay.

Bottle from M&S. Is it too pedantic to discuss whether or not this is a BIPA? Seems more like a Stout to me. The roast flavours are very pleasant and the sweet, mellifluous fruity charcoal builds throughout the swig. Not much of a hop hit at any point. I’m a bit scared to conment on Meantime beers these days, for fear of being labelled a clueless, sad, trainspotter or whatever. I like their Yakima Red a lot, but this one was nice rather than niiiiiice.

Smell of cordite on bottle sniff. Not very BIPA. Slightly acrid taste of when you stick your tongue on the side of a machbox. Slight Burton snatch? Fruity but not citrussy aroma. Smell of old fashoined sweet shop Slight smoke. Long biitter grapefruit finish with smoky bacon hop death. Slight porter note, Good.

Bottle from M&S, Oxford, purchased and consumed the same day with dad, Saturday 8th November 2014 Pours black with a large billowing light beige head. Bitter and roasty with a good malty base. Good black IPA, fruity with some bitter hops showing, really pleasant. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.6
