2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle poured into a pint glass. Looks like apple juice - slightly orange gold. Very thin white head. Aromas of cereal and honey, some light seasoning notes (a little pepper and herbs). Tastes of honey, which is a bit if a wtf for a single hop ale. Apparently sovereign is a delicate hop - how am I supposed to know? Body ok. Just bitter like.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Medium beige head. Clear amber body with light carbonation.
Earthy oily dusty aroma with strawy notes. Dry-sweet toffee and
bread taste with strawy dusty notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft
mouthfeel. Dryish toffee and old cake aftertaste with spicy
marzipan notes. Fruity perfumy finish. Musty, cellary old
flavour to the whole thing. Odd and really unusual, but still
nice in an odd sort of way. (0.5l bottle, from Marks & Spencer,
Edgware Road, London.)

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Thin white head. Orange amber body. Nose is not much at first, but then spice, fruit, hops, malt base (Pale malt?), caramel, honey and floral notes. Bitter. Dry finish. First encounter with the Sovereign hop, and it doesn’t seem to be a very pronounced hop.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pint bottle from M&S Camberley. Amber with a thin white head; gentle herbal aroma with a trace of honey; soft in the mouth with sweet creamy caramel and blackcurrant flavours; and a light refreshing bitterness to finish leaving a trace of black pepper. Rather elegant and understated.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Craft Clerkenwell, Tuesday Horal Chugging Tasting, bottle from M&S Camberley, 17/09/13.
Clear golden with a thin white head that dissipates edgeward.
Nose is bready malts, fresh toast, toffee, popcorn, citric fruit.
Taste comprises caramel, creamy crem brulee elements, toasted malt, bitter fruits, light hop notes.
Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, smooth on the palate, dry finish.
Decent enough drop, a bit creamy/milky in consist, strange for a golden blonde but drinkable none the less.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
17th September 2013
Craft Clerkenwell. Tuesday Horal Chugging Tasting! Clear gold beer with a small white head. Palate is smooth and dry with good fine carbonation. Sweet malt, very sweet lactose cream flavour. Unfortunately this dominates the mellow Sovereign hops which bring light lemon and orange citrus. Light and semi dry finish. Not terrible but way too malt led for a single hop beer.

2.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Despite being called a “Golden Ale”, naturally it poured orange in colour with a small off-white head. The aroma was subdued: light cereal and toffee notes. This subtlety extended to the beer which was on the bland side. There was bread and toffee along with a rather annoying, not the say cloying, honeyed edge. Not surprising as it contains “honey flavouring”. Why, I don’t know but it takes the edge of this beer for me.
Elgoods have made a bit of a mess of this. Sovereign’s delicate nature needs better care to get the most out of it. Here instead of off-setting the sweet malt flavours, it seems that the master plan was to add some honey syrup. In my opinion; not a good example of a single hop beer.
