Out of a bottle. Nice aroma of roasted malt and slight earth hop. Almost opaque with a nice brown head. Taste is great roast with perfect balance with the bittering. One of the best examples of a black IPA marrying the roast and hops without overdosing on either.

Pours opaque black with a few floaters and three fingers of tan head. Smells mostly of piney hops and a bit of dark fruits. The tastes flip flops between roasted malts and pine all the way through the finish. Fruity and spicy flavors as well. Feels creamy on the palate. Overall a very nice beer. I’m glad to see a good interesting beer brewed in Oklahoma.

22oz bottle thanks to unclemike: pours a mostly opaque black with a stringy-lacing light tan head. Has a lightly sweet dark caramel malty nose with lots of fresh resiny hops. Starts with good fullness and sweet dark malts with a healthy amount of crisp piny bittering and flavor hops before a drier bittersweet finish with lingering hop notes. Well balanced and flavorful.

Malty. Some bitter citrus and dryness from the hops, balanced with a sticky slightly chocolate maltiness. Not overdone, tastes great.

Bottle from Cellar Wine and Spirits-Norman. Pours very dark brown with tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, grapefruit, and some pine. Flavors of sweet roasted malts, chocolate, some citrus, and a ton of pine. Little too much sweet maltyness for liking, but this was decent for a black IPA.

Originally reviewed: 4/1/11. No date on the bottle, so I have no idea how fresh this is. 22oz wax-capped bottle. Poured into a pint glass. Pour yields a deep dark black with a finger-width tan head on top. Good lace left behind. Nose carries pine aromas, faint metal, and finishes out with mild cocoa powder. The aromas weaken considerably as I sip. The mouth is moderately-full and creamy. Carbonation is on the low side. The flavors here are odd for the style. There’s a mellow hop presence right away, but there an herbal element to this. Juniper? Clove? I can’t place it exactly, but it’s there. Roasted qualities are absent. Mild chocolate notes on the back end. This one was interesting. Not my favorite of the new style, but I appreciate its uniqueness. With the gap in reviews, something tells me this bottle has a little age on it. I’d love to compare this to a fresh bottle/keg.

Clear dark brown with a creamy beige head that lasts a hell of a long time. Leaves good lacing. Aroma is perfumy floral hops, citrus hops, herbal notes, and a little roast. Flavor is caramel, chocolate, and roasted malt along with floral and citrusy/grapefruit hops. Medium-bodied with soft carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel with lingering hop bitterness

bottle from swillbur 11/25/11. black tinted reddish brown with a tan head.... nice looking brew. it smells and tastes of bubble gum, roast, earthy spicy hops, grapefruit, a touch of choco and lots of pine. roasty dry finish. i’m not a fan of hop combo in this... seems odd and out of place. 7/4/6/3/14

22oz. waxed bottle served in a Tank 7 tulip. Pours a deep brown/black with a finger of tan head. Some piney hops and chocolate malt in the aroma. Nice amount of hop bitterness with a long lingering finish of chocolate malt. Drying from the hops and malt. On the thinner side of medium. Easy drinking, solid beer.

i could smell the aroma from where my face was when pouring. crisp fresh citrusy pine. on closer smell some malt comes through an exciting deep hop smell. when it pours it just looks thick. beautiful deep black with tan two finger head. as good as a beer could look especially for this style. it is pitch black.this beer is densely hopped, citrus and piney resinous hops dominate the initial taste and blend with a strong malt that has evident roast and hints of coffee. unexpectedly one of the best black ipa’s i’ve ever had. up there with the best. super aggressive beer that is very well done.
