The Loco Gringo Series — El CuCuy India-Style Black Ale
In Latin American cultures, El Cucuy is an imaginary creature of the dark, similar to the boogeyman, which haunts the minds of children and adults alike. El Cucuy India-style Black Ale features dark roasted notes that sneak up on the subdued caramel malt backbone and the irresistible bitterness creating a harmonious and frighteningly delicious balance. But beware, this beer is dry-hopped providing an intensely vibrant floral and citrusy aroma and at 8.6% abv is not a monster to be carelessly dealt with. Be good or the Cucuy will get you!

Bottle poured into glass. Dark brown color, creamy and light. Aroma is mostly hoppy with earthy tones with slight hints of cocoa. Flavor is geared towards..... I’d say 50/50 hops and malts. Not too shabby.

(22oz bomber thanks to bu11zeye) clear deep brown, ring of soapy offwhite bubbles. Nose of chocolate malt, rich, light citrus, agave, smells good. Taste of fudge, raisin, light citrus, chocolate malt, pretty nice beer overall. Easy to drink.

Sampled at an esbls tasting. Black with an oatmeal appearing head. This is not a favored style. This one is not bad. Licorice is not bad here. Hops come out.

Bottle from a trade, and found myself very pleasantly surprised by this beauty. I’m not as cold on this style as some of my buds, but I also rarely expect to be too impressed. These Sooners have definitely produced on the finer examples of the style I’ve had. Silky body, plenty of body and grit but nothing soupy or leaden about it. Nice hop presence in the nose, with the roasted malts bringing out some rind and complementing the other bitter notes well. Taste is a bit more dry but still plenty complex and flavorful. Well done.

Out of a bottle. Nice aroma of roasted malt and slight earth hop. Almost opaque with a nice brown head. Taste is great roast with perfect balance with the bittering. One of the best examples of a black IPA marrying the roast and hops without overdosing on either.
