The Loco Gringo Series — El CuCuy India-Style Black Ale
In Latin American cultures, El Cucuy is an imaginary creature of the dark, similar to the boogeyman, which haunts the minds of children and adults alike. El Cucuy India-style Black Ale features dark roasted notes that sneak up on the subdued caramel malt backbone and the irresistible bitterness creating a harmonious and frighteningly delicious balance. But beware, this beer is dry-hopped providing an intensely vibrant floral and citrusy aroma and at 8.6% abv is not a monster to be carelessly dealt with. Be good or the Cucuy will get you!

This was well done. Malty sweetness and hops that leave you guessing about what is to come. Very dark, in fact, I couldn’t see through it with a quickly dissipating head. A big mix of flavor with sticky sweetness and burnt malts, some caramel essence and big hops throughout. Syrupy palate. Nicely done.

Cool beer - great name and bottle and excellent black ipa. Dark brown pour. Great mix of pine and coffee in the nose. Taste was well balanced and interesting parts of pine, lemon, cocoa, and coffee. High carbonation and full bodied. Worth a try for sure!

Picked up a bottle in Talequah Oklahoma. Pours dark brown with a thick very creamy tan head. Almost looks like nitro. Aroma is hoppy with some roastiness. Flavor tastes like a good ipa with some roast instead of caramel. I don't generally like the style but this one works pretty well. Medium bodied and finishes dry.

Pours a dark dark brown with a light brown head. Aroma of slight pine and roasted coffee. Tastes slightly sweet to start with an intense hop bitterness at the finish. Medium body and medium high carb.

Bottle; Pour is murky brown with a very nice, fine bubbled, two finger khaki head into this glass. It retains well here, with fine cobwebs present. The nose is nice as well ; roasted coffee bean, chocolate malts, and piney hops are present as you’d expect. It works better than some, I believe. I found the flavor profile to be slightly more subdued than I’d like. Bittering pine initial, roasted coffee and chocolate moving forward, with modest caramel rounding it out. A lingering bittering rounds it out - its just lacking heft in the center.

Bomber thanks to soonerchamps. Pours dark brown with a small creamy head that fades to a ring and leave nice oily webbing. Aromas are roasted malt, cocoa, grapefruit and flowers. Taste is very roasty with dry cocoa, lots of grapefruit, and some caramel. Finish is very floral, piney, and bitter to mix with the dark roast and cocoa. Medium to thick body with a very creamy mouthfeel. This is basically a hoppy, thick stout and I really enjoyed it.

Bottle at the parentals with my dad. Pour is pitch black with a big brown head and great lacing. Big citrusy, lemony, grapefruity, lightly roasty, cocoa, orange peel, and floral aroma. Taste is very hoppy - big citrus, lemon verbena, orange peels, grapefruit - solid malt backbone - cocoa, roast, and caramel - with a big bitter finish. Creamy mouthfeel with high carbonation. Really solid black IPA.

A - pours as dark as a porter. Holy black ipa batman. No real head but a little ring of bubbles. S - soft floral and resiny piney hops with a sharp almost rye tone and some sweet malt notes. Almost catty. Simple and thick. M - fluffy carb. Bitter and dry with a sharp bite and lightly sweet end. Quite well balanced. Medium body and nicely round. T - dank hops, centennial hops. Dry bitter resin and grasses are first. A sharp front. The palate rolls to an I identified sweetness. Malty and lightly citrus. The end is bitter and dank. O - easily the best black ipa I've had yet. Smooth and drinkable. Not overly malty or hoppy. And so dark. 3.8

Bottle. Pours black with a brown head that dissipates to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has a good amount of fresh pine hops with a bit of grass and a backing dark grain note. Flavor has more of a musty dark grain note with roasted malts, a good amount of pine and just a bit of resin.

Pours a dark brown, almost black with a foamy white head that dissipates reasonably soon. Nose is of sweet, floral pine. The pine carries through to taste, along with chocolate, caramel, citrus and hops. The bitterness hangs around a bit. Medium mouth with a bit of carbonation. This is a nice black IPA. I’ve been searching for it a while, and it did not disappoint.

Probabky the best black ipa on the market. Biggest downfall is limited availability. When thus beer hits the you better act fast.
