Growler purchased at the brewery. Pours a nice dark amber color with a bit of haze. The aroma of this beer is a lot of sweet malts, caramelly sweetness, and a hint of yeasty fruitness. Flavor is very nice, smooth but also a bit prickly on the tongue the flavor starts out sweet and finishes smokey and candy like. Pretty nice, and very nice for the ABV?! Wow.

A clear dark brown bock with a thick brown head. In aroma, good oily molasses, dark fruits, chocolate, light acidic points. In mouth, a nice and smooth bock with chocolate, acidic points, coffee grinds, surprising. Rich and balanced. On tap at Novare Res, April 2 2010.

My Bottom Line:
This fruity and somewhat atypical Doppelbock develops slick caramel malts in a lean and soft mouthfeel.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the hazy dark red with brown hues.
-Alcohol is really hard to perceive, which is appreciated.
-I would have preferred the malts to be more cushiony and to develop more toasted cereal flavors.
-As for all Marshall Wharf beers I’ve had, this is very clean and absurdly drinkable.

on tap-pours a light tan head and deep red color. Aroma is fruity, sweet medium malt. Taste is fruity-plum, sweet medium malt-chocolate/caramel. OK carbonation. Towards medium body.

(Draft @ Three Tides) Pours slightly hazy dark amber with one finger of biege head that recedes to a thin layer that retains pretty well. Weakish sweet aroma of toffee and caramel. Served too cold so any aroma is hard to pick up initially. Mouthfeel on the heavier side of medium but a bit pebbly. Fairly nice sturdy rings and light sheets of lacing. Flavor starts out a bit sweet and sour with a bothersome bit of the vegetal/organic quality I got from the stout I tried (but not as much). Some notes of caramel and toffee and a touch toasty/smoky. Taste sweetens as it warms and a light touch of licorice and chocolate emerge. Finishes a little hot. Kind of odd overall, not really bad but a little confused maybe. Doesn’t really fit the normal MO for a doppel. If you threw some fruity hops in this might pass for a strong ale. Glad I got to try it however - Maine-made doppels are something you don’t see every day.

Pours orange/copper with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is sweet almost alty but in a good way, nice nose. Taste is sweet and sugary, rich and malty, with no way to tell that this is nearly 9%abv.
