3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Dickinsonbeer (5075) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - FEB 4, 2010
Tap at Three Tides. Pours a deep hazy yet bright ruby with a nice lasting thin off white head. Aroma is on the fruity side- raisin, fig, light grape esters, caramelized malts, toffee, light molasses deep sweetness, toast, some biscuit and earthy- fruity hops. Flavor is pretty big in the crystal malts, but the fruit esters round out the sharpness- get some grapefruit and other big american hops, big full mouthfeel yet still easy drinking and somewhat clean overall. Pretty good.
3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 MartinT (6350) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUN 29, 2009
My Bottom Line:
Strange bubblegum phenols appeared in the nose, but once tasted this healthy Barley Wine developed leafy hoppiness, alcohol lengths, and discreet malt biscuits for a brash yet nourishing example of the style.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam garnishes the misty amber.
-More malt flavors would have helped a lot, methinks.
-Even though this was obviously quite young, those unusual yeasty protrusions in the aroma might be signs of its future demise.
-The soft effervescence and plump body made for an impressive mouthfeel.
On tap at Three Tides.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Pastor (700) - Eliot, Maine, USA - JUN 14, 2009
I was a glutton for punishment my first brew when I entered the building was this big old barleywine. The brew was a nice toffee brown in color and it had a tan colored head that went to a good lace.
This to me this brew was young as well it was very hot in the nose but very hoppy as well. Flavors were very hot from the alcohol with almost no sweetness from the grains. It finished extremely hoppy and bitter. The feel in my mouth was medium and it had tons of carbonation.
I had one glass and that was it because it is so big. It was a good barleywine but extremely young in my book. There is a lot of potential in this one I like to see it with about a 8 months on it
