Purchased fresh at the 5th Year of Beer on 10/13/12. Price - $25.72/4-pack (16oz-cans) 20 pounds of fresh, wet, green Simcoe (that’s right, American) hops went into this 7bbl batch of Cant Dog. It’s listed here at 11%, however this years version is 9%. The color of this beer reminds me of Star ruby grapefruit pulp with a deep amber almost red appearance. A delicious looking example with a massive amount of creamy white foam that tops off the glass. Solid lacing through out the experience. A closer look at the glass towards the finish reveals some fine suspended solids but that doesn’t detract one bit from the look. The nose starts out a bit strong in citrus scent with apricot and grapefruit leading the way. Too sweet, not really. A nice blend of pine aroma balances things out thanks to the Simcoe hops. Taste bud heaven, damn this is good. Sweet and creamy from the start with apricot, orange, grapefruit and caramel malt. It’s like enjoying the islands in liquid goodness. This flavor rocks!! The mouthfeel is smooth and sticky with a medium body. After my second can, a bit of booze can be detected but I could certainly keep on it. Hop bitterness, yup it’s there. I feel with time on this one though it may become one dimensional. Wow, Northern New England is finally gettting this IIPA thing right. Unfortunately this is a once a year example. The good news is you can still get Heady Topper year round in the can!! Nice job Marshall Wharf!! Keep up the good work and let’s get this one year round.
