Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Bottle. A bit foggy, yellow. Small white head. Aroma has grain and pine. Taste has fruit, grain, citrus. Body is a bit thin, mouthfeel is watery. Turns bitter on the aftertaste, finishes well with pine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear light orange color, just a little bit of haziness. Small white head. Metallic nose and aroma. Lack of hops. Kind of bitter finish. IPA? I don’t think so. (Svijet piva 0,5l bottle)

UPDATED: JUN 15, 2014 Clear orange color, big white head. Light to medium body, average carbonation. Texture is watery. Aroma is very light and weak. Traces of floral and citrusy hops. Some distant maltiness too. Light bitter taste and the rest is mostly water. Very disappointing actually. IPA? It looks like false advertising to me.

Oh how I do love a good Marstons beer, and now Old Empire shows me that I am right in this. Features include a super malty backbone and subtle hop bittering, a very 'true' IPA but the dry hopping with Cascade adds just a touch of the new world. Interesting that this is now in a brown bottle, they must be paying attention in Wolverhampton, good stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500 ml bottle @ "Den Gamle Major", Oslo March 06, 2014 Beer from a tulip glass Dark golden color with a thin beige head and little to medium carbonation. Aroma is weak, but some hop, malt, citrus, herbs and spices. Tastes weak and thin, but a slightly bitter finish. This beer lacks a lot if not everything for being a IPA

Typical English bitter, malt forward beer that has a slight grassy, hay-like hop character. Fine but nothing special, forgettable.

Not a bad looking beer, except for the clear bottle that it traveled in from Burton-on-Trent to the Chicago area. The body was a clear light amber with a respectable, sustained head. The aroma had a solid touch of skunk that never wholly went away. Beyond that there were scents of warm white bread and a splash of lime. It tasted of crackers with a lime and floral bitterness. The finish was dry and had a moderate citrus rind bitterness. Do brown bottles really cost that much more than clear ones?
